Hello all.

I think I have the first outbreak of genital herpes type 2 and before
getting tested, I would like to ask a question about spreading the
virus.

I was urinating and therefore holding my penis with both hands. I did
not have any sores on the penis, only on the thighs. I forgot to wash
my hands when I got out of the bathroom, just wiped them on my
clothes. Then I shook hands with several persons.

Now, what are the risks that I infected them?

Can I spread the virus with a dirty towel or a toilet seat?

Thank you very much for letting me know.

Not much chance of a transfer like that.

Not likely.

Here's a couple more things you should know. Soap and water will
easily destroy the virus so washing your hands is a good idea. It's
also a good idea for reasons having nothing to do with herp.

If you acquired the virus recently and your immune system hasn't had
time to gear up against it (takes 12-16 weeks for most people), it's
possible you could spread the infection to another area of your body
(i.e. oral) unless you're careful. However, since type 2 doesn't take
to the oral area very easily, even that risk is minimal. By the way,
spreading to yourself that way is called autoinnoculation. but as I
said, not likely after your immune system has had time to gear up
against the virus.

Sooo...  again, in answer to your concern, it's highly unlikely you've
spread an hsv infection to anyone by shaking hands. It's still.a good
idea to wash your hands before you leave the bathroom though.

I would like to suggest that you read "The Updated Herpes Handbook" over on
www.westoverheights.com I think your fears will be calmed down once you get
that assignment completed. You might even look back at your post and have an
honest chuckle at yourself. :-) In the meantime I wouldn't worry too much
about having infected anybody via a handshake. ok? :-)
You can not contract herpes via a toilet seat or towel (clean or dirty)..
ok? Hang in there and Merry CHRISTmas!! ~Angela
