Anyone else obsessive compulsive as a result of dealing w/ STD scares,
and/or symptoms/outbreaks? My house has never been so clean, and my
hands have never been washed so frequently.
I made a post not long ago regarding my recent situation. Turns out I
have MC, molluscum contagiosa. In dealing w/ everything since my
symptons occured this second time (it's unusual to have a 2nd MC
outbreak, but not unheard of) I read countless postings and websites,
looked at tons of photos, etc.
I'm afraid to go out of the house anymore!! Know what I mean? In
many ways it's a good thing to become more educated about topics
discussed here, but at the same time I'm now scared to shake hands w/
people! I read how even w/ a condom, an unlucky fellow still
developed HPV around the base of his penis. I know this is
stupid/ignorant, but I had no idea you could transmit HSV orally, to
someones genitalia. I'm glad I know now. I can't say for sure how I
"acquired" my MC, but it could have been from a shared towel or toilet
even! Although probably a sexual partner (even though she insisted I
was a monster for even thinking it was her). It seems these viruses
are so damn tricky and we know so little about them! I've read there
is not one known cure for any virus? (vaccinations don't count, of
course.) Will we ever understand these damned viruses?
My point and in turn question w/ this post is, are many of you now
hesitant to do many things you used to do before your diagnosis? For
fear of disease, or more specifically, fear of viruses?? I'm not
talking about solely sexual activities -although on that note I don't
feel I could ever be intimate anymore w/ someone I didn't know or
wasn't dating for a while before intimacy. One night stands seem so
far removed from me now (two+ months ago I wouldn't mind one in the
slightest, lol). Are any of you hesitant to shake hands, use public
restrooms, go to gyms or places to work out? Movie theaters? Hotel
rooms (you know they don't change/clean the bedspread with every new
guest).
Maybe I'm in a stage of post diagnosis paranoia, who knows. Molluscum
could be a lot worse I realize, HIV for eg. But now I'm thorougly
frightened about catching something else down the road, you know?
Thanks for your time,
Sam

Sam,
I have an Anxiety disorder as well as OCD. It's the sort of thing that
creeps up on you over several years. It usually takes a significant event or
a long talk with a shrink to make you realize you have it though. Reality
can be viewed in many different ways... realizing that the way you look at
the world may not be the same way other people look at the world can be
quite a shocking event. I still have trouble grasping what it truly means. I
always "thought" I understood other peoples viewpoints... but I never really
did.
Are you sure you have an STD? Have you seen a doctor? OCD can play BIG
tricks on us. I can literally cause false symptoms in myself. To the point
that my heart starts beating irregularly. I can make myself have acne
breakouts, blur my own vision, cause gas... all sorts of things just by
having an anxiety attack. Luckily I am a very "logical" person and have had
this problem for years so I can identify these issues when they occur and
bring a swift end to the episodes. If you really do have OCD or anxiety
issues you could be creating your own ailments. And the more you worry about
those ailments the more they'll trouble you. In fact, as you learn more
about the diseases you're anxious about on the internet, you train your mind
what symptoms to create. You "Learn" how to be sick.

Thanks for the response. Yes, I'm sure I have Molluscum. Went to the
doctor and it seemed he knew w/in less than a minute I have MC, then
went to a lab for a culture test. I do try not to let it bother me,
and I think "ar's" post after this one hits it a little closer. The
realization or knowing what's out there now has me a bit bothered or
"freaked", if you will. I'm not going to let this rule or run my
life, but this newfound knowledge has sure changed the way I go about
things. Do you think the media, schools, peers, etc. do a good job
educating or spreading knowledge about the ease of catching &
significance of having STD's?

We can all tell you for a fact that people are NOT educated about catching
stds. Heck, many people that I have spoken to don't even know that cold
sores is oral herpes. I think you mentioned in your post that you didn't
know you could pass it to someone's genitals. And the fact that people
don't know that herpes testing is NOT included on the standard std
panel...they come in here saying that they were tested for everything and
they were "clean," etc. Yet, they had no idea that they weren't tested for
herpes. It's a shame, really.

The "world" in general doesn't teach kids about STDs. They use STDs as a
tool to pich their political and religeous agenda. They use them to teach
you to avoid pre-marital sex... or they teach you that Condoms will protect
you... when we all now know that they wont.
We have the liberal left and the religeous right arguing about what we
should be told about sex as children. The end result is we aren't told
anything... in fact, we are often told lies.

Hi Sam,
Well....I would say that your response is typical...but I don't think it is.
I think you have suddenly become aware of what's out there. However, it's
still out there and it always has been. Awareness is good. Locking
yourself in your house is not. :) To answer your question, no, I am not
bothered by these things.
