About two years ago I had some intense burning and general
uncomfortableness in my genitalia. I saw my doctor and was told it was
a yeast infection. The yeast infection medication didn't seem to help,
and the symptoms went away. A few months later, they came back.
General malise, sore throat and intense burning, seemingly under my
skin, around my labia and anus, sometimes on my inner thighs.. I did a
lot of reading, and it sounded like I might have herpes (ive been
tested for eveything else already). I went to my doctor so many times,
and was told that there were no lesions, no weird skin, nothing
looking like herpes at all. But the symptoms continued on and off. It
took me forever, and I paid out of pocket, to find someone to test me.
They did the pocket 20 minute test, and I was told I was negative for
HSV2, they sent the blood off to do a HSV1, and I was told I was
negative for that as well.

This was good news, and I heard about the Herpes Vaccine trial a few
months after this. I was retested at that time (western blot I
believe) and was told I was negative for 2, but positive for 1.
So. I know im positive for 1 (like lots of the population apparently)
and negative for 2.

To my knowledge ive never had an oral sore, or a genital one (and
believe me, ive looked!) But I still have this awful burning sensation
which comes and goes and lasts for weeks at a time. Ive seen many
other doctors now, and am always told that it cant be herpes. Can it
be herpes?  Ive been single since all this weirdness started
happening, and I know that there is no real way to determine if the
HSV 1 is oral or genital, so when the time comes, how do I tell
someone I MIGHT have genital herpes, but I don't know for sure. I
don't think that will go over well!!

Thank you for reading all this, ive been reading on this group for a
while, finally thought id write and get your opinion.

What you do is you tell your partner that you have herpes simplex type-1.

Preferably *before* sex . . .

It doesn't *sound* like herpes, but I'm at a loss as to what it
might be.  You've certainly been poked and prodded by enough
doctors.

Would you describe the pain as a neuralgia, a pain similar to a mild
sunburn?  Or as something else?

Mike -

I was under the impression that jane doe knew for a fact that she had herpes
simplex type-1.

What do you think?

Hi Angela.

>What do you think?

Well, she could have HSV1 orally.  That wouldn't explain or cause
the burning in the genital region.  Not knowing more than the little
I do (I know less and less every day) I just can't say more.  Hence
the questions on the type of pain.

How are the little ones, Yosh?

Lauren is growing like a weed . . . she finishes up the 7th grade this year.
I know that the next 5 years are going to fly by FAST!!! Fiona is already 5
months old and is as cute as a button. I have a photo posted of her on my
herpes biography page over on www.yoshi2me.com if you are curious as to what
the little button looks like.

Thanks for asking Mike!!! : )

How are you doing?

I'm pretty swell, these days.  I slapped up some pics on a Yahoo
album, too.   ;-)   My most recent trip is there, and a bunch of
family shots going way back.

C'mon, Mike, leave the tricks!
Uncover that beer-belly, for us to see what a arginine-free diet did to you.

Perl,

Just make sure you don't forget to floss if you brush your teeth.

Thank you for all of your comments! I have talked to so many doctors
and it seems like the people here have more info than most of them!

The pain is sorta like a mild sunburn. Its a burning sensation which
seems to be slightly below the surface of my skin (does that make
sense? like its inside rather than on the surface.) the weird thing is
that it seems to come and go throughout the day. at times its painful
to sit in jeans, and then later in the day ill realize im not in pain
at all at that moment.

I guess what I'm trying to get at, is the difference between say,
muscle pain, and nerve pain.  There could also be cellular damage
pain, but there probably isn't any of that in this case, from what
you've said.  Pain could also be associated with hair follicles, or
the sweat glands.  There could be swelling or pain associated with
the lymphatic system, ie. your glands.  There could be assorted
"female" pains, as caused by various infections or invasions, but
you have, one way or another over time, ruled a large portion of
those out.  There are probably even other pains.

Have you talked with any one of authoritah about herpetic neuralgia?

Is the pain more likely on days that you wear tighter pants?

I like to remind people, even those without herpes, that modern
laundry soaps can be harsh and irritating.  It's a simple thing, but
one a lot of people probably don't think about.  If you're sensitive
that way, not only should you look for "scent free" detergents, but
make sure your clothes are rinsed extra well.

That's all I can think of at this hour.

Take care,

Mike

As long as you don't know what's causing it, then herp is one of
several possibilities. Have none of these doctors taken an interest in
finding out exactly what it is? Point being, it may not be herp but
what ever it is, you need to know for sure because it just might be
something serious <shrug> who knows?

>I know that there is no real way to determine if the
>HSV 1 is oral or genital,

Depends on how much money you'd like to spend. I've recently learned
that a serial PCR test is becoming more and more available for home
testing. You do the swabs yourself over a couple of weeks to a month,
even with no lesions present (but during your burning symptoms
hopefully) and deliver them to a lab for PCR testing. I don't know
much more about it than that yet but my understanding is that a two
week daily test kit can run about $200-$250. So if that sounds like
it's within range, you might check into it. I'd like to know more
about it myself but just haven't had time to check into it.

>so when the time comes, how do I tell
>someone I MIGHT have genital herpes, but I don't know for sure.

I think you might just have a discusson on STDs in general, and when
the subject gets around to herpes in particular, just tell him what
you just told us. And while you're at it, you can ask him about HIS
status. If he's never had a fever blister and he's never been tested,
then he can't be sure either. And in fact, he could be infected with
both types for all you or he knows. So at that point, it'd be time for
him to determine his status (with a test) as well. The results of his
test would determine how you proceed from there.

>don't think that will go over well!!

Depends on his attitude and how you present the facts of the subject.
With a little tact on your part and open mindedness on his, it
shouldn't be a problem. If it is, you probably wouldn't have wanted
him to stick around anyway. I mean, after all, how would he react down
the road when an actual sticky situation presented itself.
