Hi-- I was infected w/ herpes about a month ago. I knew I had it
genitally, but then I got tiny bumps around my mouth so I got it
orally as well! The person I was seeing didn't admit he had herpes
til I confronted him. My real question is if someone has gotten
swollen lymph nodes in their neck because of this? My neck nodes have
been swollen up and down for almost a week. But I've had evidence of
herpes on my lips for longer than that. I feel a bit tired but can
still take care of business. I have other symptoms like, I think I
got thrush, but I do use a steroid inhaler and I've been told that can
cause thrush and tongue pain. I'm terrifed I got HIV and just wanted
to know if anyone has had the same sort of herpes symptoms. The pain
in my lymph nodes is stressing me out. When you look on the internet,
all symptoms seem to always go back to HIV! And I don't think a test
would be accurate for a couple more months.
Thank you!

Swollen glands are a common symptom with herpes outbreaks,
especially in the first few outbreaks. The swollen glands just tell
you that your body is hard at fighting some new invader, in your
case, probably, the herpes virus.
That doesn't mean you couldn't have other things, but by itself, it
is very common with herpes, so maybe that's all you have.
You ought to get to a doctor though, as soon as you can, and find
out more.
Take care,
Mike

Hi.
One of the most common symptoms of herpes is flu-like symptoms. And swollen
lymph nodes are a part of that.
However, you need peace of mind so I suggest testing for HIV now and then
repeating the test in 6 months. That will help you to ease your mind. You
can also insist that your ex be tested.
Hope this helps a bit.

Mike and Ar have already given good responses to the other part of
your post. But this part is a little unclear. When you mention HIV, I
can't tell for sure if you mean Aids or Herpes. So for the record, HIV
causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) and is a completely
different virus from HSV which causes Herpes. The two are in no way
comparable or related except they both can be transmitted sexually so
both are considered STDs. Some recent studies indicate Herpes (HSV)
sufferers may be more susceptible to infection by the AIDS virus upon
exposure to it because any sort of opening in the skin (i.e. lesion)
allows easier entry by HSV. It's also possible that other factors are
involved but that's unclear. The point though, HSV doesn't cause HIV.
Or any other diseases besides Herpes for that matter. Be that as it
may, many people confuse the two because the initials are similar (HSV
= Herpes Simplex Virus ...and... HIV = Human Immunodeficiency Virus
... but except they're both viruses, along with umpteen zillion other
types of viruses, they're two different things).
If you think you may have been infected by BOTH HSV and HIV, then yes
you should be tested. Wouldn't hurt to run a test now and another one
later (3 months).
I've totally missed your point, then the simple answer to your
question is, yes swollen Lymph nodes along with other flu like
symptoms are common symptoms of active Herpes (HSV), especially in the
early stages of infection.

Thank you so much for your responses. I did mean AIDS when I said
HIV, not herpes. Since the herpes thing is so new, less than 6 weeks,
my symptoms are all over the place. The newest one was the swollen
lymph nodes on my neck. I've been having problems w/ this for about 5
days. I was hoping it was the herpes virus, but getting nervous
because of the symptoms I see for early HIV which always mentions
swollen lymph nodes. I am getting the results of alot of blood and
urine tests back Tuesday. The only major thing I haven't been tested
for yet is HIV. If I had no symptoms perhaps it wouldn't be so scary.
I am glad to know that the swollen lymph nodes could be due to the
herpes though. Has anyone else had this happen?

Check this out: http://www.homeaccess.com/
FDA Approved AT HOME HIV TEST
Can you believe that sh.t? I suggest ordering it ASAP. I wouldn't want to
worry if I were you. And the "at home" feature makes it very discreat and
un-embarressing.

Ya know what, I was just sitting on the couch and thought of your post...
then it dawned on me. You were just diagnosed with HSV a couple of weeks or
months ago right? I'm assuming that you're worried about HIV based on the
same event that gave you HSV. If that's true, you can rest assured that your
symptoms now have nothing to do with HIV. To my knollege, HIV has no
imediate symptoms whatsoever. It needs to gestate for many months, years,
even decades sometimes before you really start having symptoms.
It's not like you're going to be sexually active for the next 30 days
anyway, so just wait it out and go take the blood test.

Hi there-- I would LOVE to believe that it takes many months for
symptoms of HIV, but there is a beginning stage to HIV infection:
What Are the Symptoms?
HIV infection comes in three stages: acute infection, chronic
infection, and AIDS.
Acute HIV infection is the earliest and shortest stage of HIV
infection. Not everyone gets symptoms, but most people come down with
a flu-like illness three to six weeks after infection. The symptoms
are the same as flu or mononucleosis: fever and fatigue lasting for a
week or two. There may or may not be other symptoms:
* A blotchy red rash, usually on the upper torso, that does not itch
* Headache
* Aching muscles
* Sore throat
* Swollen lymph glands
* Diarrhea
* Nausea
* Vomiting
So I'm in the perfect window of time for this! This happened about 5
weeks after possible exposure. My only symptoms are swollen painful
lymph nodes in my neck, and some pain in my armpits. I went to the
doctor yesterday to get results of alot of bloodwork and she said the
test that shows what your white blood cells is doing looked good and
if they were fighting HIV the numbers would look 'off'. Some of my
bloodwork hadn't gotten in yet. She gave me antibiotics for my
lymph nodes and swore other people had this and just needed
antibiotics. I hope she's right, but I don't have alot of faith in
doctors. My gyno told me it didn't look like I had herpes!

Have you tried google and a keyword search for HIV?

Well, I don't see why your GYN doctor feels that she can diagnose you by
site alone. Since many people that have herpes don't get signs or symptoms
I'm trying to figure out what she was thinking but attempting to do that to
you. If you want to find out if you have Herpes Simplex or HIV then you need
to be tested specifically for those two stds. It's nice that your GYN doctor
feels she can interject her opinions... but the bottom line is that you need
accurate facts about YOUR situation and the only way to do that is to get
proper testing.
Good Luck -
Angela : )
