About a month ago I noticed a small spot on my scrotum about the size
of an eraser head. It was pink, slightly raised and didn't really
hurt, just felt slightly irritated when I rubbed it. I wouldn't call
it painful, just that since it was where it was I was constantly
acutely aware of it. A week later two smaller spots appeared. So I
went to the dermatologist. The spots were raised and indented. They
weren't ulcerated per say - just a triangular indentation in them and
they were red. My doc looked at it and said he wasn't ruling out
herpes but it was very atypical of herpes. The calssic "fluid filled
bumps" were not there. He figgured I caught my skin in my zipper
(ouch). Prescribed me a steroid creme for a week. He did no blood test
and no viral culture (I am not sure if it would have mattered as the
first spot, the biggest one, had been there for a while by that
point).

The steroid did not hurt, but it did not really help. He assigned it
for another two weeks.

My life kinda fell apart over those two weeks but thats a different
story. I was under a considerable amount of stress. The sunday before
the third doctor's visit putting on the steroid felt irritating. The
next morning there were some new spots - very small, like the size of
pin pricks maybe, slightly south of the last two new ones. Slightly
raised like the others. They aren't quite clustured, they are a bit
seperated but they are still close to each other. That tuesday I went
to the doctor was the worst of all the stress so far. He prescribed
Valtrex for a week just in case and I felt like he gave me a life
sentence. My friend convinced me to go for a second opinion (and she
quoted Joe vs The Volcano - you get a second opinion on something
called a Brain Cloud). This doctor also said that it did not look like
any herpes she had ever seen and had I not actually held up my scrotum
and pointed out exactly where it was to her, if it just hung loose,
you couldn't even see it. To put my mind at ease she did a full blood
test battery and a viral culture (by poking at it with a swab really
really hard alot!). I find out the results of that next week tuesday.
She told me that she agreed with the dermatologist and I should stay
on the Valtrex and the steroid creme.

The Valtrex is helping a bit after two days. The redness is still
there, but the slight height to them is going down. I don't have any
answers and I am kinda scared of it all (as is everyone when they get
diagnosed from what I am reading).

Alright so heres the pros and cons towards it:
Pro: My last two partners have no symptoms on their genitals.
Con: Most people have had oral cold sores at some point in their life.
Pro: Two doctors said they really didn't think it was herpes.
Con: They didn't really know what else it could be.
Pro: Herpes outbreaks don't typically last over a month.
Con: Something has been on my scrotum for over a month.
Pro: It is getting a little clearer.
Con: Its getting clearer since I have been on Valtrex.

So thats my story. I am waiting for the results of the tests and such
on Tuesday. In the meantime I am going to stay on the Valtrex and keep
using the steroid creme (although that seems backwards according to
this forum). Any insight into any of this would be helpful.

Well, I don't have any advice for you.  But using steroids on actual herpes
is a big, big mistake.  I would stop using the steroids and just use the
valtrex.  And, why aren't the doctors doing anything to determine what it is
you have??  A herpes blood test will not be accurate unless you've been
infected for 12 to 16 weeks.  The culture is a good idea but you need to
culture immediately upon seeing the new blister forming.  But you've already
figured that out.

I'm sorry I don't really have any other information to share.
