When I am experiencing an outbreak I do not feel comfortable looking
people in the eye. My shame makes me feel inferior to every person I
speak with; I am like two completely different people 'with' vs.
'without' an outbreak.
I am not promiscuous at all, yet I believe that when I spent 3 hours
alternating between deep kissing + deep talking with a girl last
October -- I caught an extremely severe strain of Herpes. That next
morning I noticed two cold sores. My cold sores wouldn't go away, so
I grew an untamed beard which hid my problem, but made me feel
ostracized from my peers.
I finally shaved the beard, but the cold sores still were there.
About a month ago, I finally got smart + started to read many posts in
this wonderful newsgroup.
I have completely changed my diet + began taking 1000 mg/day of
Lysine. That helped a lot, but it was so depressingly frustrating how
once one old sore is gone a new one immediately appears elsewhere. I
can sometimes get my outbreak down so that the cold sores are so small
you can only see them up close, but I have had cold sores non-stop for
months. Actually, the best they ever got was on two separate
occasions when I got drunk (the following morning it looked almost
gone). Now I am taking 3000 mg/day and my outbreak has gotten better.
I am considering 3500-4000 mg/day. I am only 25 and don't worry much
about health consequences because I feel as if I am already dead since
herpes has turned me into a recluse.
I definitely can't see a doctor (no health insurance, live with Mom).
My diet I believe is perfect; each day I eat about 4 cans of tuna,
cottage cheese, plain yogurt, chicken, potato w/ sour cream, apple
juice, turkey + cheese on rye bread, carrots. I stopped brown rice,
whole wheat bread, oatmeal, orange juice, chocolate, caffeine
COMPLETELY. Plus, I take 6 times a day 500-mg Lysine pills. I
exercise often, too. Also, my stress is low. By the way, I am most
certain it is Herpes because the severity of my outbreak varies based
on my Lysine/Argenine intake.
i read a lot of people say that they take 3000-mg Lysine "during" an
outbreak, and 500-1000 mg Lysine when no cold sores present. I hope
to be that way, too -- its just that my outbreak is neverending. I am
worried that I contracted a very strong, severe case of Herpes --
perhaps due to me kissing a girl for a very extended period of time.
I will keep on. i know that if one day this gets better, i will have
such a stronger appreciation for life.
Thank you very, very much to any insight or advice anyone has,
Rodge

Keep in mind ... if you are still suffering from flare ups ... L-Lysine does
*not* work for everybody.

Rodge,
First, if you really got this and it's really the herp (and it does sound
like it to me, though what do I know; I'm not a doctor and this is the
internet), then in all likely hood it will get better as time goes on and
your body learns to deal with it better.
Even though you don't have insurance, you should still try to check out
local clinics. Health departments usually have something you can go to free
or cheap. Don't give up on seeing a doctor, but be prepared to have to wait
around a while. They probably see this more than you can imagine and are
ready to help.
Also, I think someone (Mike? Angela?) once posted a link to the drug company
that makes Valtrex where they have a program that people who can't afford it
can get it cheaper or free??? And the generic acyclovir is much cheaper.
Valtrex turns into acyclovir in the body, but it lasts longer so you don't
have to take as many doses throughout the day. Sounds like you're already
taking lots of doses, so that probably wouldn't bug you so much. I don't
endorse this, but it's also possible to order over the internet, though I
think (from what I've seen) real pharmacies are cheaper.
Good luck,
mishaisacat

Mishaisacat is right!!! Just because you don't have insurance or lack of $$$
doesn't mean you can't get to the bottom of what the problem is. Do not
give up!!!
Here is the web site that mishaisacat was talking about. It's the Patient
Assistance Program and this is the link:
http://ipp.gsk.com/pap/pages/eligible.htm . Also, nobody turned anybody
away that was willing to make payments and/or qualify for free assistance.
Hope This Helps,

thank you so much mishaisacat + angela for your uplifting, practical
advice.
mishaisacat, it is so refreshing that my body will eventually adapt +
things will be better.
but, how long typically until that happens ?

I have had herpes for eight years. I can't really pin point when my body
started to handle the virus because I was on suppression for two years.
It's been two years since I stopped suppression and I have only averaged one
flare up p/year.
Everybody is different so it's hard to know what will happen with your body.
Generally speaking though ... the longer you have the virus the better it
gets provided there are no other complications going on other than having
herpes.

Ah, hum, uh. I'm not sure. I think it (sucky answer, I know) it varies
with everyone. I think there's something about most people have so many
outbreaks their first year, then so much fewer after that then even fewer
years and years down the line, but it's not a real regularized virus that
affects everyone the same. I know someone's got to have a better answer
than that.
best,

Sorry to hear about your condition. There are alternatives to prescribed
drugs that work. I use Lauricidin which is a brand name for monolaurin. It
is made from coconut oil. It took me several months of use to see results,
but I have a different type of infection. I am very pleased with the
results I am getting. Anyway, you can get monolaurin in a health store or
you can buy it online really cheap at lauricidin.com. Dr. Kabara, the
researcher and inventor, will answer questions about dosage.
