A pap smear does not test for herpes.
If you want to know if you have herpes, then please ask your doctor for a
herpes blood test. Many doctors don't know anything about them so be
prepared to find another doctor if your original doctor doesn't help you.
What did your doctor say when you told him about the herpes?

In the words of my students, "True dat," Arlen!
Paps test for changes in cells that may be indicative of cancer or
pre-cancerous changes, usually caused by Human papillomavirus viruses, a
virus family with oodles and oodles of members (at least 60-70 and with more
being discovered). Of those oodles and oodles only four, types 16, 18, 31,
and 45, are strongly associated with cancer. When a Pap picks up cell
changes, the sample may also be dna tested to see if the changes are due to
one of those types of hpv known to be related to cancer.
Paps can sometimes pick up other stuff because it's a smear looked at under
a microscope, so the examiner may see other abnormalities, but it's not a
test for those, per se. For example, I've gotten a call back that the cells
looked fine, but there appeared to be a heavier than normal discharge
*possibly* indicating a minor yeast infection at the time of the test. I
was advised to come in if I had any symptoms and not to worry about it if I
didn't because the body is always in flux and it might just be a normal
thing. The point is, other than what they test for, Paps aren't very good
at giving you any other information. Just like, say, the gauge on your car
that registers how much gas you have will only tell you how much gas you
have, not how much oil's in the engine, or the condition of the brakes, or
how fast you're going, or whether or not the car is overheating.
Now to the specifics: where exactly are the "red places down there"? If
they're where you shave, they probably are razor burn. I may be off here,
but herpes rarely pops up in areas with hair. It prefers the soft,
hair-less, delicate mucus membrane type skin of the genitals themselves.
It's less likely, though not impossible, for it to pop up other places.
Good luck,

I'm so sorry to hear that the nurse told you that herpes would show up on a
pap smear.
That was not correct information.
