Are Mouth Ulcers signs of Herpes?

Hi All,

Last week my girlfriend had an outbreak for the first time of sores around
the genital area and a swab was taken by the doctor. The results are due in
soon but everything points to herpes. This outbreak occured a few days after
we first had sex.

By all accounts it appears that I may have been the one that infected her
although I have no visible signs of sores, or headaches or dizziness or
anything else.

I have also taken a blood test and am ready for whatever lies in store. I
understand that it possible to be a carrier without symptoms. I do have cold
sores on my mouth occasionally, so I guess that the blood test will show me
to be positive for Herpes type 1 but I have been racking my mind to tryy and
see where I may have caught this then I suddenly remembered something:

About 13 years ago I had a massive outbreak of ulcers in my mouth. They were
so painful, my lips were practically inside out and I couldn't eat anything
more than vegetable soup as my mouth was so painful. The doctors identified
this as acute gingivitis or stomatitis, but couldn't really tell me for
certain. These ulcers disappeared after a few weeks and came back exactly a
year later with far less pain. This has since never retured.

Does anyone recognise this? Was this a form of Herpes?

Thanks for any insights.

Hi Redconda,

I'm glad to hear that you've had a blood test as well.  It's the only way to
settle things, of course.  Make sure your girlfriend's herpes are typed,
too, by the way.  Sometimes you have to ask them to do it.

Since you already have type 1 herpes, it's possible that you gave her
genital herpes through oral sex.  If her herpes comes back as type 1, then
that may be what happened.  If you also have type 2 herpes, then that's
another story.

Canker sores inside the mouth are not caused by herpes.  They are usually
caused by some sort of mouth trauma.  We have no way of telling what you had
inside your mouth without having some sort of swab test done.  It's rare to
have herpes inside the mouth, but it does happen occasionally.

Let us know how the test results turn out.

Hi Grant

Thanks for your post. The results are next week for both of us.

I just wondered about this mouth thing as it was so bizarre, especially as
it came back a year later.

Cheers
