Greetings;

I recently became infected with HSV-2.  I know this because my
girlfriend admitted to me that she tested positive before she met me
after the first sore showed up.  Now, i only have one sore, and it's
rather small now (started off the size of a quarter, bright red and
hurt like hell) and I can't even feel it, but it's been a week and it
still hasn't gone away.  I've been taking about 2,000 to 3,000 mg of
lysine a day and it still hasn't disappeared.  How long does it
typically take for these things to go away?

Primary outbreaks, the outbreaks that occur (usually) when one is
first infected with the virus, can take two to three or more weeks to
heal completely.

Recurring outbreaks generally don't last as long, though individual
patterns can vary widely, even in the same host.  But the body
generally gets better as time goes on fighting against the virus.
After a year or so your outbreaks may come and go in as little as a
five days to a week.

Taking Valtrex or Acyclovir at the first signs of outbreak can shorten
the duration significantly, either stopping the virus outright or
shaving several days off the experience.

L-lysine is thought to work for some people, but any effects are not
likely to be as significant as those from the anti-viral medicines.

Take care,

Mike

Thanks for your reply Mike.  I was freaking out because the sore
hasn't disappeared yet.  I guess i'll give it another week.  I'm
hoping to control this with just lysine and a good diet.

Thanks!

If you look at the lysine data it shifted a while back to suggesting that
if it works it is more likely useful for general control of the virus and
helping prevent its appearance than for treating an outbreak. Also if you
look at the human data IIRC most if not all of the effective side of it is
for HSV1 not 2.

There are better things for treating outbreaks....

You say that you recently became infected with herpes simplex type-2. Well,
how did you find out? Were you tested specifically for herpes? How do you
know for sure that what you have is herpes?

If what you have is herpes ... Lysine might not work out for you. Also,
Lysine is not a proven antiviral medication for herpes simplex. If you do
have herpes and you are trying to treat your flare ups with a herpes
antiviral medication ... then you need Famvir, Acyclovir, or Valtrex.

How well and long people heal varies, which is the pat answer I am
sure you expected.

For me, as a diabetic, I take forever -- like 6+ weeks to heal out of
an outbreak even with high dosages of Valtrex.

Your first is said to be your worst....which has not been the case
with me....but again, your mileage may vary.

I am not trying to sound like a doom-sayer....truly.  What I am trying
to get at is that *you* might take that long to heal, especially
without any medication other than Lysine.

Is there a reason you are not checking into any other medications
short of the amino acid?

I'm just hoping to control it with excercise and proper diet, etc.  I
don't want to be chained to a pill or a prescription.  Also, those
antivirals aren't cheap!

Hi Austinhodoggie,

I support you in your efforts to control the virus through diet and
exercise.  And, you will probably do quite well.  However,  no matter what,
your body still has to go through the learning phase of the virus. So,
expect the first year or two to be difficult.

I haven't used the meds but I also have type 1, which tends to be more mild
over the years than type 2.

Take care,

Absolutely!  I am not disagreeing with you at all....just curious.
Many people do have great luck with the simple idea of taking care of
oneself.  I know it has paid off for me....outbreak free for a good
while here, sans Valtrex.

The pills are not cheap, this is true.  Some local Planned Parenthoods
do give scripts for it for a small price....some do not.  Just a
thought, should you find yourself in the position to need some.

=)
