I have had "rashes" in my groin for as many years as I can remember. They
always go away sometimes with the application of a topical cream like
Cortaid. However, this time it has lasted longer and is different. It has
at this time no outward apperance which is often the case (the worst is a
light red patch) but this time it is more sever with more of a pin prick
tingle along with the ich and burn. cortaid seems to help somewhat ... but
not like it used to. I should tell you taht I am 61 yo and was abused when
i was a young person by two sisters. Since then I have had only one partner
who I am certian has not had anyohter relationships. Could it be herpes and
go clear back there. Since I am very subject to skin deseases and seem to
get them all could i have picked it up off a towel at the gym or something.
I went to a doctor and he said ...oh no visible signs so it is nothing. I
asked about doing tests and was very honest about my concern (at 61 there is
no longer any reason not to be) and he said ... no no need to do any tests.
So, do I just live with this. I suppose the only reason I am more concerend
now isthe TV advertisments for Valtrex causght my attention and then surfing
the internet made me think could it have been there all this time? Any
thoughts would be appreciated

Hi Larry,
Nope, you didn't get herpes from a towel at the gym. Herpes needs skin to
skin contact to transfer. I suggest getting another doctor. If yous isn't
interested in finding out what's bothering you, then find one that is.
There are plenty of blood tests that will tell you if you have herpes or
not. Have you ever had a cold sore?
And, it could be some kind of other type of skin irritation. The doctor
should be able to take a scraping of the red skin and find out what it is.

Hi, Larry. It doesn't really sound like herpes, but it must be
something, and one of those somethings could be HSV. Like Arlyn said,
though, you wouldn't have gotten it from a gym towel. Or a toilet
seat.
But if you're concerned, your doctor should be concerned, and it
doesn't take much time and trouble to rule out certain things like
herpes. And whatever it is there might be more appropriate salves
than Cortaid, and maybe even something that will get rid of it
permanently.
Talk to your doc again, or find a new one, or see if any of the
walk-in clinics in your area will run a test or two.
Take care,
Mike
