Hi,
When I was 15 years old I was raped and he gave me genital herpes. I am
now 30 years old and 17 weeks pregnant. I have one child delivered by c-
section. I will be getting a repeat c-section. I am concerned about
something my doctor did the other day. I was having mild
cramping/contractions so he checked my cervix with his fingers. I was 1
cm dilated and he could feel the membranes (amniotic sac) bulging a bit
through my cervix. I was also at the end of a herpes flare up and had a
few lesions that were healing. I am scared that since he actually
touched the amniotic sac that he may have spread the virus to the baby
after touching my lesions. I am worried sick and can't even sleep. The
contractions stopped after medication, so that is not a concern. The
concern is that he touched the membranes after possibly touching the
herpes lesions. I am worried he gave the virus to my baby in utero.
What do you think? Any women out there who had an exam like this while
pregnant (during an outbreak)?
Thanks,
Kim

Kim,
I don't believe your doctor gave herpes to your unborn baby in the way you
have described. Besides, you are sharing your antibodies with your baby. For
more information on herpes and pregnancy there are some links here:

FYI: If you need to stay in touch with somebody that has had herpes for
eight years and will be 37 weeks pregnant on Monday feel free to contact me
through that web site!

From what I know (I'm not a doctor, nor do I have any particular
medical training) there's nothing for you to worry about. The doc's
fingers didn't go anywhere that a stray virus wouldn't be able to go
on its own anyway, and herpes just isn't transferred to babies that
way.
Take care and let me wish much happiness in bringing a new life to our
little world.

In theory, the amniotic sac should help to shield your baby from just
about anything. I know you are scared....how about merely asking your
OB about it?
