Doctor Frustration

ok, here's the story, I'll apologize beforehand for the long post.
About 4 months ago I noticed herpe-like symptoms "down there".  I
immediately went to see a doctor.  She couldn't give me definite yes
or no.  Said it "might" be herpetic and ordered blood tests and took a
culture.  All came back negative. Doctor said not to worry, probably
just "dry skin". Up to that point my last possible exposure herpes
(oral sex) was almost two years ago, so this hit me by surprise, but I
thought, ok i'm negative.  Just recently I contacted my primary doctor
to get another blood test as a follow-up.  He said that he'll order
the blood tests, but said that they were "meaningless" and not good
indicators of infection.  ok...great, now I'm really confused.  He
needs to see me before ordering the test, so I'll get to talk to him
again.

My question is this, is there any validity to what he is saying?  How
can I definitely know for sure that I am infected or not, or should I
even be worried? I just wish I knew a definite answer so I can move on
with my life, positive or negative.

The test used was Quests HerpeSelect ELISA.  HSV1 & 2 IgG were both
.15.  IgM titer was <10.  Prior to this I have never noticed any
symptoms (face or genitals) and haven't had symptoms since.

Lastly,  does anyone have any advice of what to ask/tell my doc the
next time I see him (e.g how to jedi mind trick him into ordering a
Western Blot)?

Thanks Again,

A

-A,

This is what I think you should do . . .

Go to this page: http://www.ashastd.org/pdfs/blood_test.pdf . It's in pdf
format.

If you can print it out . . . do so . . . and take it with you to the
doctor's office.

As for him telling you that blood tests do not really help . . . that's not
true at all.

If you get an accurate herpes blood test it can help.

Check out the testing section here: http://www.yoshi2me.com/page4.html .

Good Luck and keep us posted.

I basically had to get my own western blot run.  It was a little tricky and
I still needed a signature from the doctor, but I took care of all the
details so it really wasn't any work for him.

If you get the right blood test, then it is very accurate.
