The virus is transmitted by skin to skin contact so yes, kissing is a
common route of transmission.

Depends.
After the lesion has healed and pink skin has covered it, that's a
good indication you're good to go. No 100% guarantees though.
Asymptomatic shedding is always a possibilty, although that doesn't
occur all that often if you've been infected for awhile (year +).
On the other hand, the kissee matters. Oral Herpes infection is pretty
common and most people are asymptomatic. So if your kissing partner is
already infected with type 1, you don't have to worry about
transmission. Only way to know for sure, assuming no symptoms, is with
a blood test. Be sure to ask for a type specific test.
