I used to use tanning beds before I got married. I never had any problems
with the heat from the tanning bed triggering my herpes outbreaks. I
honestly don't know if the heat from the tanning bed is going to make your
outbreak worse. I would imagine that there might be some discoloration in
the area once it's completely healed. If it were me, I would cover it up
with a washcloth or something. Just put a wash cloth over the spot and tan
to your heart's content. OR you can wait until the outbreak heals completely
and then go tan.
Good Luck,
Angela

In the past, I've used tanning beds, but then I quit going to them for
a couple of years and started this week and then I got an outbreak.
But thanks for the tip! I appreciate it!

If the heat generating inside of the tanning bed is a trigger for outbreaks
then skip the tanning bed and go for the spray tans. Those are really nice
these days. Have you checked out the sunset tanning episodes lately?

what is the sunset tanning episodes? I haven't heard of that. I think
the reason why it was a trigger this time is bc I haven't tanned in so
long that my body probably just freaked out. Does that make sense or
am I just trying to make myself feel better? I know this ob was the
worse that I've had in years!!! I did tan yesterday and did what you
suggested and covered it up and it didn't make it any worse!
yeah....bc I'm going out of town with my bf next weekend for our 1yr
anniversary......

Sunset Tan is a reality show about a tanning chain on E. It's very
entertaining if you like to watch reality shows. I'm a reality show junkie.
What are you using to treat your outbreaks? You know about suppressive
therapy, right?

I do like most of the reality shows.....LOL I do know about
suppressive therapy. I'm on valtrex everyday and then I have the
valtrex ointment.

Being on Valtrex every day is suppressive therapy. So that's good. Have you
stopped to consider that maybe what you think is a herpes outbreak might be
something else? The reason I'm suggesting it is because suppressive therapy
with a clinically proven herpes antiviral like Valtrex usually does a great
job at keeping the outbreaks under control. (even if you use a tanning bed)
That is why I'm thinking there's a possibility that it could be something
else.
Also, you can check with your doctor to make sure that you are taking the
correct dosage for you as far as taking Valtrex every day goes. Some people
need more than others. As far as the cream that you are using goes, it's
useless. It's better to keep the area clean and dry and free of creams and
ointments. (unless of course you are in pain in which case you should talk
to your doctor about that too!)
Hang in there,
Angela ;)

the valtrex ointment is useless? All the doctors I've talked to have
told me to keep the ointment so just in case I do have an outbreak to
use the cream and take the pills.

I wasn't even aware that Valtrex was available in an ointment. Are you
sure you're not thinking of Zovirax? At one time, before the pills
came out, it was the only thing on the market, FDA approved, that
showed any effectiveness at all. When the oral medication came out, I
don't think many people used the cream much anymore.
There's a non-prescription (in the US) cream on the market though,
approved for oral infections, that some rave about and some find
useless. That'd be Abreva. Only way to know if it works for you is try
it. Although it's approved only for oral infections, there have been
posts here that claim it helps with genital infections as well. YMMV

Yup, I don't think people are supposed to use Abreva on genital outbreaks.
I don't think there has ever been a Valtrex cream.
Either way, the creams are useless.

Reminds me of the joke about a thermos bottle being the smartest
gadget in the world. It keeps cold things cold... and hot things
hot... but.... how do it know? ;-)

I haven't kept up lately but I don't think so either.

The zovirax cream is not all that great either.
Besides, it's much better to keep the area clean and dry.

You don't even need the cream if you have the antivirals. It's better to
keep the area clean and dry. However, do what you think is best and if you
feel you should listen to your doctor then by all means do listen.
Good Luck,
Angela ;)
