Herpes Immunity?

Hi,

I recently went in for a check up and my dr said I was immune to
herpes, is this true? I've searched the internet and have found
nothing about people being immune to herpes. Every test came back
clean and I've never noticed anything strange on my body. Should I
believe my dr??

Can I have some of your blood please ?

To be serious, I don't know of this, I'm sure it could be true though, some
people are immune to HIV. I guess you can find immunity to many if not all
conditions amongst certain people. Pity they can't take something from them.
Apparently it's not done because of other possible transference and the
possibility of causing more problems. I saw them transfer blood in Africa
once though against Western doctors protests from an Ebola immune person to
a sufferer and it worked.

Are some ppl really immune to aids?? or do you mean that they can
still get infected but just never get any symptons but still be
carriers. My dr said I'm also not a carrier she plain out said SEVERAL
times that I just can't get it or give it.

Yes, apparently. There have been a few rare cases who despite exposure
seem not to have picked up HIV. There exists in virology the theoretical
construct of someone whose body just happens to mount the right response
at the right time to beat off a given virus. These people exist as case
reports asking whether they might be naturally immune - and no-one really
has a clue how to identify them or why they might be immune. The general
view its that its something in the innate immune system or weird stuff
happening at the mucosal surfaces.

The big one of these was a certain weird situation in the
prostitutes in Nairobi I think it was (yup, found the initial paper).
Fowke KR, Nagelkerke NJ, Kimani J, Simonsen JN, Anzala AO, Bwayo JJ,
MacDonald KS, Ngugi EN, Plummer FA. Resistance to HIV-1 infection among
persistently seronegative prostitutes in Nairobi, Kenya.
Lancet. 1996 Nov 16;348(9038):1347-51.

Now they still havent worked out why this happened - some papes indicated
some immune repsonses, others found IgA responses (which no blood test
would pick up) and used that to explain it....but in all they had no idea.
Also a number of these people who seemed resistant would go home, still
remain contactable by the study people whehn they returned and lose that
immunity when they came back to the city - suggesting a persistent
exposure might be necessary to produce and maintain the immunity...ie it
was situational.

They still havent worked out how that works, nor been able to convert it
to a protective method yet (to my knowledge which is a moderately rusty
with HIV).

Yeah, I want to hear from your doctor how she can conclude this.  To be
honest, I think she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I think we might be hearing things out of context.  Why would your doctor
say that?  Are you with a herpes infected person and you don't have it?  Did
your doctor say it jokingly?  We need more info.

I doubt you can create an immunity to herpes.  You either have it or you
don't.  Some people have it but never have outbreaks.  That might be
considered an "immunity."  But they can still pass it on.

No my partner does not have herpes but my doctor said I could swim in
herpes if I wanted and I would never ever get it. She didnt say this
jokingly and she was very serious about it. I asked her "So I can
never get infected with herpes?" and she said "No, you can't and you
can't pass it because you can't get infected"

Then, you have to go ask why the Dr said this, what immune factor, what
test, what genetic component or whatever is the basis of this decision.

I just called and looks like she is out on vacation til next week. You
guys stay posted on this.

If anyone has any information on this, please let me know, I greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks

Why don't you call your doctor up on the telephone and ask him why he thinks
that you are immune to HSV. Just because your tests came back negative
doesn't mean that you can not ever contract herpes.

Well she said that I can't get type 1 or 2 and that I have an immunity
to both of them. She even said that her husband is immune to it. She
said it's rare but possible. Is she crazy??

This is weird... and I can't find anything on the internet that backs
up what she is saying.

That's very interesting. I think that if it were possible to use this as a
way of developing a vaccine it would probably have been done. Maybe someone
is working on it now ? It seems such a shame that whatever these people have
can't be utilised in some way. I personally would be prepared to take a
transfusion from an immune person if it were possible to eliminate or weaken
the infection even if it were against common medical practice. I think many
other people would too.

Unlikely - this sort of passive vaccination is one of the first things you
try with a vaccine. I know its been tried with a number of herpesviruses
(though Im more familiar with the use of it in veterinary herpesviruses).
It has been successfully used for a number of infections starting with an
experimental transfer of hyperimmune serum (the old Hepatitis vaccine was
based on a gamma globulin passive immunisation).

The problem with circulating blood hyperimmune sera is that a) anything
active circulating runs the risk of being transferred if you go direct
from blood products and b) you essentially end up transferring antibody
only and passive immunity of this type is fairly short lived, and reliant
on antibody being neutralising for the infection in question.

> It seems such a shame that whatever these people have
> can't be utilised in some way.

It is/was in Ebola after a needlestick injury made someone
seroconvert IIRC, generally then you move on rapidly to producing antibody
in a safer background.

Yes but just because it's rare but possible doesn't mean that she knows for
sure that your body is immune to HSV. Ask her why she thinks your body is
immune to contracting HSV.
