Strange question

My step son's mother has a little girl that gets what certainly looks like
cold sores. She is in the first or second grade I guess. Well, her mom said
she gets "sores" around her mouth because she lets her puppy lick her face
and mouth. That in itself is pretty bad having dog germs all over your face,
but I have never seen anyone get sores from a dog lick. I'm thinking maybe
the friction could cause them, or is there something you can get from dogs
that will do that? My step son said "oh, a dog's mouth is the cleanest there
is! They don't have really much germs!" I said to him that anything I have
ever seen eating cat poop is not clean in my book! And then dogs have that
habit of licking themselves too. He looked a little greenish after thinking
about it.
Anyway, I mentioned that cold sores were herpes and she went real still, so
I thought , uhoh she really didn't know that. So I explained how you get
them, possibly very innocently, not just sexually. And we talked a little
about it. I know I was uninformed, but I never thought the dog did it. Lol!

Yep. Cold sores on little kids are pretty common.

>Well, her mom said
>she gets "sores" around her mouth because she lets her puppy lick her face

Funny. What on earth gave her that idea?

>I'm thinking maybe

Maybe.... but more likely sun or wind or cold or any of a thousand
little irritations kids are subjected to. My guess is it's plain ol'
ordinary HSV type 1 that's just doing it's thing.

>is there something you can get from dogs
>that will do that?

Not that I know of.

>My step son said "oh, a dog's mouth is the cleanest there

I've heard that my whole life. I don't know if it's true or urban
legend but it's been around a long time.

>I said to him that anything I have

The theory is, it's because of all that poop eatin' and privates
lickin' that they've evolved some serious immunity and anti bacteria
butt kickin' defenses inside their mouths. So in theory, it's clean
due to its self cleaning nature. Not because they're careful about
what goes in it.
I have no idea if that's fact though. It's just what I've always been
told.

Now.... what's the strange question?  ;-)

I love reading your posts!  It seems you have a good perspective on herpes,
dogs, poop eatin', and ya know......things like that!

Hey Wanda,

Animals' mouths are sterile...really.

The reason the woman thinks it's the dog is because she doesn't want to face
the truth--someone has herpes.  Too embarrassed, so she made something up.
Yes, I'm being harsh today.  :)

Hi Ar! I know she didn't want to admit it. She has the idea that so many
people have. Herpes is a bad, horrible thing you get from sex. Well, you
might get it from sex, but it's not the only way you get it. I tried to get
that across to her.

I wonder what the herpes virus does to a dog's mouth?

Hi Wanda,

Hey!  I did some research on the story that a dog's mouth is sterile.  The
consensus is that it is a myth!  I stand corrected.  However, what was
interesting was how the myth got started.  But that story is for another
day.

I would think that human herpes can't infect dogs.  (Like I know what I'm
talking about).  Since feline herpes can't infect humans....

I hope this woman wises up and gets her daughter to a doctor.

Wanda ~ is she going to let the doctor take a look? I'm really surprised
that she didn't take her to the doctor. I really don't think that it was the
dog. Plus, it could be anything. It could be oral herpes, it could be an
allergic reaction. She just won't ever know if she doesn't take the little
girl in for a check up, ya know?

Hi Angela!
No, she won't take her to a doc for it. She told me that her
ex-boyfriend told her it was herpes and she got mad at him for saying it. I
told her I didn't mean to make her mad, but that's what it looked like. I
also said it was not a "sex" thing. You could get it from old aunt Bessie
kissing the baby type of thing. She didn't sound mad when she left. It
wouldn't have changed what I told her though. I did mention that when she
had a sore that the doc could do a test on it to see what it was.  She
didn't say anything.

Well, I hope she takes her to the doctor because what if it's an allergic
reaction to something?
