Worried

Two months after a protected sexual encounter I noticed on my pubic
region (just above my penis) what looked like a small mosquito bite. A
month later, it disappeared. Only a few weeks ago, a new blister has
shown up on my penis, at the very base. At no time has it been itchy
or painful. The person whom I had the contact with tells me that she's
been tested after our encounter and everything is A-ok, but I've never
had a blister down there before. I've also started shaving there at
about the same time the blisters occured, and im praying that it is
some kind of non-viral infection (possibly due to shaving) instead of
HSV.

The blister itself is small, red (like a blood-blister) and was on me
for at least two weeks.

I went to the doctor today to get it swabbed and tested, but I've got
a week to wait. Does this senario sound like HSV? Please help, Im
really really worried about it.

Thanks,

C

Here's my quick 2 cents.
I'd put my money on "ingrown hair" (time to change razor blades). But
get blood tested 12-16 weeks after your encounter anyway with a
Western Blot or one of the Focus tests. Culture's are notorious for
false negatives.
Here's some info on blood tests:
http://www.ashastd.org/pdfs/blood_test.pdf
And as far as the "everything is A-ok" thing, did she tell you what
kind of test she had? If "everything" meant "all stds", she may be
mistaken. Herpes isn't usually included on a standard std panel. And
she may not realize that "no symptoms" does NOT mean "no herpes".
Anyway, it's not something to worry about. Herp is treatable. And even
without treatment it isn't progressive and doesn't lead to any other
diseases or anything. And usually the outbreaks get less frequent and
less severe over time. In fact, most herpsters don't even have
outbreaks. Or at least none severe enough to notice.

Hi M2 ... I just wanted to say that the only time a culture is notorious for
false negatives is when the person waits too long to get into the doctor.
That's why it's so important for people to get in and  have that culture
done right away.  If they wait too long ... then the sore has a chance to
heal and by the time the test is taken ... there is that false negative.
But, a person goes in ASAP and they have a culture done ... then there
result is most definitely right on the money with no question.

Hang In There,

Its very distressing to think that waiting a week and then getting a
negitive might not at all mean that I do not have herpes. I've noticed
two blisters on my butt, and last night got a cold sore on my lip...
Now I am just terrified that i might have it.. and they might not be
able to help me... this waiting
is hell... i don't know what i will do if i am positive. Please help..
i am really scared of what this will mean...

Hang in there Charles ... I know it's easier said than done.  You will feel
much better once you get to the bottom of this and find out once and for all
if you have herpes.  I promise that having herpes is not a bad sentence.
Herpes is easily controlled in most cases ... if you would like ... you are
more than welcome to take a look at my Herpes Biography here:
http://members.cox.net/yoshi2me/MyBio/MyBio.htm . You can also read about
how I told my partner that I have herpes.
If you would like to do some reading up on herpes ... the Updated Herpes
Handbook is a good place to start.  I have the link listed in the books
section over on this web site:
http://members.cox.net/yoshi2me/Links/Links.htm . Try and remember that you
are not alone.

I'd trot on back down to the doc and let him have a looksee. Maybe
culture them too. Especially if they just popped up. Or, if you think
you may have been infected for awhile, a blood test might be a good
idea. But be aware that it could show a false negative too, for the
first 12-16 weeks (the time it takes for antibodies to build to a
detectable level). After that time though, they can be really
accurate. The Western Blot that Yoshi mentioned elsewhere in this
thread is the gold standard. Here's a link to some info on blood
testing:

Terrified of what??  A cold sore now and then? That's what Genital
Herp is, except in a location that's out of sight from most people.
It's not progressive, in fact it usually gets milder and less frequent
over time. The outbreaks might even go away completely even if left
untreated (note: you'd still be infected though ... just no
outbreaks). And it doesn't lead to any other diseases. It's really not
what it's cracked up to be.

>and they might not be able to help me

It's treatable. No problem there.

>... this waiting is hell...

oh! yeah ... that's a pain. Not sure what to tell you there, other
than go about living life and get your mind off it. No sex just yet
though. Not until you know for sure what's going on.

>i don't know what i will do if i am positive. Please help..

Fact is, I know plenty of people who lead better lives because of it.
In some cases, it acted as a wake up call. In others, a reason to eat
healthier, excercise, etc.  It's all in what you make of it.
Not to worry though. You may not have even contracted it. And if you
have, it's not the major deal you seem to think it is.

See if they can get hold of a lab to do a cell smear test. They streak a
swab on a slide and then test it with antibody to detect HSV antigen.
Tzank test is one like that, or it might also be called and
immunofluoresence test - assuming they do it.

It has problems, crossreactivity, possibly a higher cost due to the skill
needed to read it well, it too will have a fail rate if there is not virus
present and availability are ones I can think of offhand, but its does say
something about the lesions in question and it does say it quickly as
there is no culture step. Its another way to go that might at least give
an answer.

Hi C ... hang in there.  Try and be patient and wait for your test results.
Without the test results it could by anything ... in the meantime if you
would like to learn more about herpes you are more than welcome to check out
this web site: http://members.cox.net/yoshi2me/Links/Links.htm .  There is a
section that pertains to testing if you want to read up on that while you
wait for your test results.  In the meantime ... keep us posted. ok?

You are not alone.
