Hi...

I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice and/or peace of mind as it
seems I am getting nowhere with the medical community.

I have had burning/itching skin on my inner thighs continuously since
August. Some days are better than others but it's always there. It has
extended all the way down to my knees but is currently up in my groin. I
have not had any sores that I have seen although I did have something before
the itching and burning started that was treated with steroids and cleared
up quickly. I was seen at the STD clinic in early Sept. and received a clean
bill of health. I did have a slight rash at that time and the woman told me
that it looked fungal as it was at the base of hair follicles. She also told
me that any blood tests for herpes were expensive and non-conclusive since
most people have been exposed at some time.

Thanksgiving weekend I started having painful erections with the pain
continuing even after the erection. Again...nothing that looks like sores to
me. I saw a dermatologist that week and he told me 'You don't have herpes'
based on the fact that he did not see any lesions. He also did not see and
dermatitis or signs of fugus (Lotrimin seems to ease the burning and itching
for a short while). When I told him of the painful erections he recommended
seeing a urologist.

I just came back from see a reproductive endocrinologist. He also said that
he saw no signs of herpes. He tends to think I have scar tissue on my penis
causing the painful erections (which have subsided pretty much) and has put
me on tamoxifen. He stated that he has never heard of painful erections
being associated with genital herpes although it is mentioned on Web-MD.

I am now going to go back to my PCM and ask for second opinion from a
dermatologist. I have refrained from having sex with my wife for fear of
transmitting to her. (The excuse is that my erections are painful).

So...I have had 3 medical practitioners tell me that I do not have herpes
but I still feel that I might. Anyone have any recommendations??

Hi Baltor,

If you want to know if you have herpes, have a blood test.  The person at
the STD clinic was incorrect.  The blood tests, (there are good ones and not
so good ones) will tell you if you have herpes.  It will also tell you if
you have type 1 or 2.  What it wont do is tell you where your herpes is
located.  The "exposure" to herpes the STD clinic person was talking about
means the person has herpes.  There is no "exposure."  If the test says you
are positive, then you are.  But if you've never had an outbreak, then you
will not know if you have oral herpes or genital.

If you want to know what your rash is, have a dermatologist take a scraping
of skin cells and run some tests.  I would think that would tell you what
the rash is.  Fungal infections are difficult to get rid of and easy to
spread.

Take care,
ar
