Positive herpes blood test and shingles

Hello,

My girldfriend called me recently very distressed. She had received a blood
test and it showed positive for herpes, and she was upset because it could
have only come from me.

I assured her I have never had it, so that the test must be wrong.

She called the doctor's surgery, and they advised her that if she has had
shingles in the past, then this can cause a positive result for herpes. She
has had shingles before, so this seems to explain it.

But I've never heard of this before. Has anyone else experienced this? I am
in the UK.

Many thanks

That's not totally the case. Yes, it's possible that she may have contracted
herpes from you BUT it's also possible that she could have contracted herpes
from somebody before you. 90% of those that have genital herpes don't even
know that they have it for lots of different reasons. Did she have a type
specific antibody test? In other words did they tell her wich type of herpes
she has? Was she positive for HSV-1 or HSV-2.?

Just because you don't "think" you have it doesn't mean that you don't have
it. When was the last time you were tested? An absense of signs or symptoms
doesn't always mean that there is no herpes. A clean std test doesn't mean
that you were tested for it either. Since herpes is not part of the routine
std testing process then chances are that you have never even been properly
tested for herpes.

Ok, well herpes simplex and herpes zoster are two different things. Also,
herpes zoster (aka: shingles) doesn't just come and go.

There is a really neat UK message board that I like to from my site:

You might check that out. Lots of great people post there too.

My advice to you would be to find out what your status is..
