For about 3 years now I get these killer sores, just one big one on
the side of my tongue. It's not a blister that has fluid or anything
but is raised up and white in appearance, about 3/8 inch long. No scab
or scaling or dried up stuff. No redness. It lasts 7-14 very painful
days, then it goes away for 2 months, then it comes back again like
clock work, usually on the other side of the tongue. Sometimes there's
an accompanying earache and swollen salivary gland or gland in my
throat and it feels like one big infection from my ear to my throat on
one side of my head. I swab this 20% Benzocaine solution from the drug
store called Kanka on the hot spot about every two hours. Lot's of
salt water rinses. It helps but not much. I guzzle fluids. I try and
eat right almost all the time. I don't drink or smoke or get high. I
practice normal oral hygiene. I'm not swapping spit with anybody.
Nothing seems to make much difference. I also feel run down and achy
and depressed while it's happening.
I went to a doctor to ask if I had herpes and she looked at it and
said, "nope, it's something you ate, I can prescribe something but
it's expensive and won't do you any good".
I had a girlfriend in the 80's who had genital herpes but we used
protection mostly. 3 years later I had adult chicken pox. 15 years go
by without incident, orally speaking. Then about 3 years ago I started
having this recurring mouth problem. Any idea what could be going on?
I live in the sticks. Unless you have a broken arm the doctors here
don't seem to know much. Thank you.

It doesn't sound like herpes but I would think a swab and a lab test
would render a diagnosis.

I had a similar rash but in the groin area some years ago. I went to
the doctor immediately where he told me that he'd stake his medical
degree if what I had herpes. So confidently, I went about my business
enjoying life and what-not. The lab culture report also indicated that
I did not have herpes. About a year after that, the rashes returned and
this time, sores on the inside of my upper lip--the just looked like
canker sores--not much more.
I returned to a different doctor and showed her the rashes. She
immediately said, "oh, that's herpes...". I was shocked. They gave me a
blood test to look "specifically" for the presence of herpes antibodies
and BINGO. I had Herpes types I and II.
Basically this... keep bugging doctors for these tests and read
symptoms carefully. I won't even try to guess what you have because
there are other viruses that can cause what you're getting on your
tongue--be persistent and good luck.

Always insist on type specific herpes antibody testing no matter how badly
the doctor or healthcare professional is sure that you have herpes. Being
diagnosed by site is not always accurate. Here's my herpes testing page:

I have suffered from a similar thing. My sores are only about half the size
of yours and usually disappear after 3 or 4 days. The rest of your
description matches my case exactly. I find that I have trouble speaking
clearly due to the pain in my tongue.
I asked my doctor about it (no sores at the time of my visit) and he didn't
have any ideas and didn't seem too interested.
The only thing I can think of is that I might be biting the side of my
tongue in my sleep. But it seems a bit odd that I would do this on both
sides of my mouth.
