You know.. I'm so sick of hearing about New Orleans. I feel bad about what
happened but that Mayor Nagin is not the sharpest knife in the kitchen - if
you know what I mean. Biloxi and Gulfport (in my opinion) got hit the
hardest but all we keep hearing about is New Orleans. Why aren't Biloxi and
Gulfport getting the same coverage? I just don't understand why the media is
reporting only about New Orleans. Talk about playing favorites.. Are you
guys getting much help by way of relief programs and things? What's going on
down where you're at?

I guess New Orleans is just known by more people. I've talked to
people in other parts of the country that never even knew Mississippi
had a coast! LoL! ... and the news media, I think, goes where they
feel the most interest lies.... and the best ratings.

Basically, most of the debris is cleared from the first quarter mile
inland from the beach. Practically every man made structure is gone
from the beach front. A little new construction has started but we
have two major problems. Number one being money. Insurance companies
aren't paying off. And most people lost more than just their homes.
They also lost their jobs and businesses. Soooo... for the people that
are staying here... no money. We're told the government grants are on
the way but.... so far no money. What do ya do? Second, there's such
a HUGE deficit in housing. Even though there is plenty work to be done
(right now we have the lowest unemployment rate in our history.
EVERYbody that wants a job HAS a job), there aren't enough workers to
make a dent in what needs to be done. And the reason is.... we don't
have enough housing to house the workers that would normally be here
to build new houses lol! Sort of a chicken vs egg situation.
But except for those two problems, things are going pretty well and
it's easy to spot new improvements popping up every day. Things are
happening a heck of a lot faster here than New Orleans. I've been over
there several times and there's parts of that city that still look
like the day the water went down. They haven't even cleared the sunk
boats from the bottom of the municipal harbor or the wrecked boats
from the piers and parking lots. Our harbor was more damaged than
theirs but cleared within a few months of the storm. The biggest
difference I can see is that our experience was a "natural" disaster,
plain and simple. We can deal with that. But theirs was a "man-made"
and "political" disaster (most people don't realize the bad part of
the storm completely missed New Orleans). The condition of those
levees was widely known, even to us over here, and that issue had been
their political football for many many years. They've just been
extremely lucky before now. Frankly, I'll take our "natural" disaster
over their "man-made" kind any ol' day.
But to your original question, I don't hear many complaints about the
help we've received. In fact, as far as voluteers go, the opposite is
true. The volunteer response we've had from the rest of the states
(and other parts of the world for that matter) has been hard to
imagine. A whole new industry has sprung up around here known as
"voluntourism" ;-)

It's so nice to hear about what is really happening down there from the
horses mouth. Thanks for taking the time to share what is happening. Let me
ask you something.. how is the Casino industry doing down there? Also, what
is happening with Keesler AFB?

>how is the Casino industry doing down there?
They're as controversial as ever but, with the economic situation we
find ourselves in, there's not much fight left in the opposition. In
fact, the State Legislature has just amended the gaming laws to allow
casinos to operate land based now instead of just dockside. A couple
of them in Biloxi were able to reopen within a couple of months of the
storm and by now there's 5-6 open including the biggie, Beau Rivage,
re-opened a couple of weeks ago. Biloxi Mayor is predicting 18-22
casinos there in five years. Gulfport isn't quite as casino friendly.
The Grand sold its locasion to the Copa so looks like only the one
casino will come back in Gulfport. The Copa, with a new name, can't
remember at the moment what it will be, is supposed to re-open in a
few weeks. Long Beach voters are still slugging it out on whether to
allow a casino at all. Frankly, I don't think they have a choice.
They're flat broke. I'm not sure what Pass Christian's going to do but
I haven't heard much talk of allowing a casino there. The city is
broke but the residents are fairly affluent, even the homeless ones
;-) so they'll make out somehow without casinos. Bay St Louis and
Waveland have re-opened a couple of casinos recently and one more
re-opening soon. From what I've heard, all the casinos that have
opened are staying busy although I don't know where they're patrons
are coming from or where they're staying while they're here. The
hotels haven't rebuilt yet. I guess people are driving in and then
driving back out again.
>what is happening with Keesler AFB?
They're rebuilding. They were hit pretty hard and lost most of their
on-base housing. Most of their facilities were destroyed or badly
damaged too. It's a slow process but they'll eventually be back up and
running full steam.
That's my up to the minute on site report.
Over and out -snappy salute- ;-)

Is Boomtown Casino still on the back bay of Biloxi?

>Is Boomtown Casino still on the back bay of Biloxi?
Yep. It's still there. Off the top of my head though, I don't recall
whether or not it's one of the ones that have reopened. If it's not
open now though, it will be soon.
