Hi all,

Did you know that cats, monkeys, dogs and elephants among other
creatures get different forms of herpes. In cats herpes is deadly. I
was surprised to find this out.

I stuck a list of as many herpesviruses as I could find up here a couple
of years ago. The family goes down the developmental tree to at least
Pacific Oysters....

Deadly is IMO a poor description of feline herpesvirus infection. It can
kill, yes, neonatal kitten death can be associated with it, but as in the
human population a very large number of animals carry the virus, mostly
with little or no sypmtomology.

The most common expression of the virus seen is if I remember
correctly probably recurrent URT disease and the ocular lesions that you
see with the virus. Certainly its the opthalmology side that gets people
excited (at least the opthalmologist here is into FHV). And ACV treatment
for eye disease in cats is one of the very very few licenses in place for
vets to use antivirals...
