triggers and outbreaks

Hello,

I posted a message in Picking Up the Pieces and didnt get a response. I
guess there were other issues that were more pressing, and thats
understandable since I am kind of a veteran.

What I was curious about is in terms of trauma causing outbreaks, could
that be defined as a minor injury? I hurt my back a little over the
past weekend, just lifting it slightly, and it hurts!

Two days after I hurt it, I had burning in the thighs and some
prickling and then yesterday I had a couple of itchy blisters that came
out in the same area as usual. So I am thinking that the back strain
caused the outbreak? Then "trauma" can be as little as a back strain?

I'm just curious to know if this is a probable cause of the outbreak.
My outbreaks are really almost nothing now, but they are still
frequent, but I have gotten used to having them so its not really a
problem anymore.

Oh one more thing...I have to go to a chiropractor for my back. Do I
have to list on the patient questionaire that I genital herpes, or is
that not really nessesary?

Thanks,
Al

Hi Al,

Unless the chiro is going to be messing with your genitals, there's no need
to tell him/her.  Or, if it figures in your diagnosis in some way.  For
instance, my gyn knows I have herpes but my endocrinologist doesn't.

Any trauma can lower your immune system enough to bring on an outbreak if
you are susceptable.  However, there's really no way of knowing if that is
the specific cause of this outbreak.

Thanks ar,

So that means that if the questionaire says "do you have any sexually
transmitted diseases?" Then I should just say "no"?

Thanks,
Al

If you feel comfortable just saying "no" then so be it. However, there is
nothing wrong with being honest on your questionnaire so that the health
care profession is aware of your medical history.. know what I mean?

It's up to you, Al.  I don't feel the need to tell anyone who won't be
directly affected by it.

Hi,

Thanks ar and angela,

I'm just thinking of being judged by telling someone I have that even
though I shouldnt since 40% of the population either has genital hsv1
or hsv2. See the reason I ask is I am having an endoscopy done this
week and on the very long questionaire it asked if i have hpv, so i
checked yes and it asked if i had herpes, and I checked yes, but put
genital next to it. I think they wanted to know if i had oral herpes
more because its an oral endoscopy, and the frequency of my coldsores
are almost nothing, so i don't know if i did the right thing or not. I
just don't want to be turned down for treatment because the doctor is
afraid of getting herpes or hpv from me.

Same thing with a masseuese, because I do have back problems, would I
have to tell them I have genital herpes, and if i did, could they
refuse to massage me? I don't want to be selfish, but I also need to
have my back treated.

Thanks,
Al

Al ~

It just depends on how you feel.

If you don't feel comfortable disclosing your status then don't.

If you think you should then do.

Make sense?

Angela :)

Okay Angela thanks,

So if a person with genital herpes lied about not having it to a
doctor, they cannot get in trouble I guess. I suppose you could just
say you forgot.

Thanks,
Al

Al,

I doubt anyone is going to refuse to treat you.

If that's what triggered an outbreak, I think I would consider it as
caused by "stress" rather than trauma. Any injury with pain can cause
stress on the rest of your body and stress on your immune system.
I think of a "trauma" trigger as direct to the outbreak location. Like
masterbation for instance or tight jeans rubbing the area.  Any sort
of rubbing, abrasion, or irritation, directly to a site of potential
outbreak can trigger an outbreak at that location.
Granted, none of this is cut and dried, and triggers can come in
combinations soooo... anyhow, just a thought.

Well you might have a point there. Apparently that was just part one of
my outbreaks after I strained my back, because a week later another
one! Plus I was under stress from a death in the family and problems
with ex-girlfriends etc etc... Having alot of sex hasnt really been an
issue, but I have just met someone else and we have been kind of busy.

I met someone who said she only has oral herpes and we have been on and
off, but lately together more steadily. I'm just amazed that she isnt
afraid of getting herpes/hpv from me, as I told her I have them, but I
am glad she is okay with it.
