So my girlfriend just had a break out of cold sores in her mouth.  She
had 2 on her lip, one on her tongue, and one somewhere else.  Anyway,
I've done the research and found that its called herpes simplex 1 or
whatever.  At least I hope.  Should I be worried about infidelity?  I
mean I know i could have given it to her but I have no symptoms of
either.  My next question is that once the herpes in her mouth go away,
is it okay to resume a normal relationship or could I still get HSV 1
from kissing her?

I guess I just have no idea what to do, or what to even think.  Can
anyone explain this to me or give me some insight as to what to do?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi JT,

Is this the first outbreak for your girlfriend?

Herpes can lay dormant for many years before some stressful situation brings
on the first outbreak.  And, so you should know, a person can have herpes
and never have an outbreak.  That means you could have given it to her.
Before you start thinking about infidelity, you should have a herpes test
done on yourself.  That way, you'll know what you already have, or don't
have.

Now, it's really easy to pass on type 1.  It's possible your girlfriend got
it from a peck from an aunt, or a friend, or a child, etc.

Also, it would be a good idea for your girlfriend to find out if she really
has herpes.  Did you do your diagnosis based on your research?  Or did a
doctor do the diagnosing.  It's unusual for herpes to be inside the mouth,
so I would want to make sure it is actually herpes that she has.

Your girlfriend can pass herpes on to you at anytime--whether she is showing
symptoms or not.  This is why you should find out if you already have
it--that way, you won't have to worry.  There are medications out there she
can take which will cut down the chances of her passing it on to you, if you
actually negative for herpes.

Take care,
ar
