Hi,
I recently learned that I have HSV2 antibodies. This means I might be
contagious if I have unprotected sex, even if there is no visible
outbreak - is that right? (At least that's what the doctor told me who
carried out the blood test)
Ok - I can protect my partner by using condoms.
But what about oral sex? Can she catch the virus from touching my
genitals with her mouth? That means: Will she likely develop lip herpes
type simplex 2? Will I need a condom for oral sex, too?
I appreciate your answers!

Hi Ralph,
Yes, your doctor was correct.
Type 2 generally does not like the oral region. Therefore, it is difficult
to pass it on through oral sex. HOWEVER, we have had people here who had
oral type 2.
Please make sure you actually have type 2 and not type 1. Though, your
doctor seems rather intelligent. Many doctors still believe that all
genital herpes is type 2.
The reason it is important to know this is because type 1 is very easy to
pass on through oral sex.
Take care,
ar

Like Ar says, risk of transfer of type 2 genital to oral is pretty
low. And even if it transfers, the likelihood of a problem with type
2 oral is also low. Meaning, even in the unlikely event of an initial
outbreak, the chance of a recurrence is extremely low. Anything is
possible though. And extremely low risk doesn't mean much to someone
who has a problem with it. I'd guess most people wouldn't bother
worrying with a risk that low though. Just know that anything is
possible.
As an aside, flavored condoms (grape, strawberry, vanilla, etc) are
available if that's of any interest.
