I just got home from the doctor's office earlier today. My doctor told me
that I have gingivostomatitis, or herpes of the mouth...my heart and my jaw
dropped...I have many questions, I hope someone can help me answer.
1.) How long does an outbreak last?
2.) Does the virus ever completely go away? (am I going to have to live with
this forever?)
3.) My partner had a coldsore and yes, I did kiss quite a lot....is that how
I got this?
4.) Does that mean she has it for sure, and that is how I got it?( I havent
really asked her, "Hey do you have herpes?") What should I do?
5.) I am going nuts, should I stay with my partner?
6.) How many times a year does an outbreak occur?
7.) If I did get it from her, and we both have it now, if she has an outbreak
will I get one too?
8.) How much of America's population has it?
9.) I know this is common in younger children, I am 15 now, so does that mean
when I get older it will just... go dormant?
I hope someone can help me out, it is very much appreciated, as you can see I
am clueless, lost and just all around shocked and devistated. Thanks again.

IIRC Gingivostomatitis is not just caused by HSV, its also caused by other
viruses including coxsackies. HSV is just a likely culprit in the absence
of some specific details on the clinical look, or virus isolation. If
thats the case and its herpetic stomatitis becomes the specific
description.
> 1.) How long does an outbreak last?
Erm 2-3 weeks I think, if I remember correctly if it is HSV then this is
usually the primary outbreak so longer than normal
> 2.) Does the virus ever completely go away? (am I going to have to live with
> this forever?)
Nope, if its a herpes infection the characteristic of the group of viruses
is lifelong infection. Good point is that while the virus can recur there
is a tendency for the virus to recur less over time. A fair number
of people get the one outbreak and never see anything again except under
extreme stress. The primary outbreak is also usually the worst by a long
way.
Most people have this issue whether they know it or not, the virus is a
very successful parasite, as are the rest of them. I'll do a herpesvirus
101, once you have this intial series of questions answered.
> 3.) My partner had a coldsore and yes, I did kiss quite a lot....is that how
> I got this?
Quite possibly. Although it is possible this is a nasty recurrence of
virus you have
> 4.) Does that mean she has it for sure, and that is how I got it?( I havent
> really asked her, "Hey do you have herpes?") What should I do?
If they get classic cold sores, then its herpes. Most people simply arent
aware of the fact or like to think there is a difference between HSV as a
cold sore and HSV any other way.
> 5.) I am going nuts, should I stay with my partner?
Why leave? The question you have to ask yourself is 'in what way does this
affect the relationship's foundations'. I would suggest you get plenty of
questions answered here before you have enough information to answer that
question, whichever way it goes for you.
> 6.) How many times a year does an outbreak occur?
Depends on person to person. Some get the priamry and never see it again,
some dont even get the primary (although obviously in this case if this is
HSV thats not your case). Some people get an outbreak a year or so, some
more.
> 7.) If I did get it from her, and we both have it now, if she has an outbreak
> will I get one too?
Nope - not really. Once infected then superinfection might occur but your
own virus/host biology should dominate. However in a shared house often
you can share triggers (like stress etc).
> 8.) How much of America's population has it?
No theres the biggest question of all....huge numbers.
Dependant on the study, between 60 and 80% of the population of the USA
has HSV1 which is the commonest agent in oral herpes, but also causes
about 1/3 of new genital herpes cases. And before you freak on that one -
no its doesnt move about inside your body, getting infected in one site
(ie face, hands etc) doesnt mean it can then recur elsewhere, it has to be
physically transferred there and then get past the immune response to
establish. In your age group (12-17) the latest figure I have is about 45%
HSV1 positive, with 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 having had a recurrent lesion in the
last year...
HSV2 is in about 22% of the USA population, thats the one people generally
like to go freaky. The percentage for your agegroup is only about 6% or
so.
> 9.) I know this is common in younger children, I am 15 now, so does that mean
> when I get older it will just... go dormant?
Thats the tendency. Its not guarantee however, but it is very possible.
Whatever happens you are by no means alone, in this issue.

I've never heard of "gingivostomatitis" to be real honest with ya. So your
doctor came out and said that you have oral herpes? Do you get cold sores or
fever blisters around your mouth sometimes? If you do, then you have oral
herpes.
> 1.) How long does an outbreak last?
Outbreaks vary from person to person. Some people get them and some people
do not get them.
> 2.) Does the virus ever completely go away? (am I going to have to live
> with
> this forever?)
If you have oral herpes - then yes - you will have this for the rest of you
life.
> 3.) My partner had a coldsore and yes, I did kiss quite a lot....is that
> how
> I got this?
If you actually have oral herpes then that is most likely how you contracted
the virus.
> 4.) Does that mean she has it for sure, and that is how I got it?( I
> havent
> really asked her, "Hey do you have herpes?") What should I do?
Just sit down and talk to her about it, ok?
> 5.) I am going nuts, should I stay with my partner?
You need to calm down and talk to her about this. Did your doctor give you
any information? Was the doctor able to answer any questions that you might
have?
> 6.) How many times a year does an outbreak occur?
You know.. I'm not all too entirely sure that you actually have herpes.. so
let's not jump the gun, ok?
> 7.) If I did get it from her, and we both have it now, if she has an
> outbreak
> will I get one too?
First you need to find out what your status is for sure. It's probably a
good idea that your girlfriend get tested as well.
> 8.) How much of America's population has it?
Why don't you take a look at the free herpes handbook over on
westoverheights.com - you can read that right from the site.

I HAVE A CURE FOR ORAL HERPES!!
Ok, Abreva I've only used a few times and it's only good a first symptoms.
Oral Herpes only.
The best thing to have around for symptoms is Acyclovir. Go to your doctor
and tell him you want the cream, and tell him/her you also want the pills.
At first sign you start putting on the cream and start taking the pills. 20
years of experimenting, believe me this is your only chance of stopping it
dead in the tracks.
Now for the CURE or Prevention. There are many things that can cause a
breakout.I have found one sure thing that causes my body to breakout, MSG.
MonoSodium Glutamate found commonly in snacks and chinese food. In fact, In
the last 4 years I had one cold sore. I went to a Thai Restaurant, and I
didn't think Thai Restaurants used MSG, the next day I broke out with a sore,
I called the restaurant and asked if they used it in their food and they said
yes. Beware of any snack that is flavored such as Doritos. Check every
package. Believe me, I have been able to avoid these annoying breakouts.
Since you can't always know if there is MSG because sometimes they just don't
know in some restaurants, they you take the Acyclovir at first sign. It's
usually a slight headache and fever and then the tingly sensation.
Please let me know if anyone else has found this to be true
I think 50% of the population has it, it's no big deal. Just avoid MSG

I forgot the other big enemy is the sun. Always carry a lip balm that has
spf 30 or higher. I have them everywhere.

Hi goldcard,
I strongly recommend taking the word "cure" out of your emails. There is no
cure for herpes. It can only be controled.
Thank you for sharing your information.
