Scalp massage brings on HSV Keratitis?

Can a vigorous scalp massage bring on an episode of Herpes Simplex of
the Eye (HSV Keratitis) in someone who has a history of the disease?  .

It is my understanding that the HSV virus that affects the eye lives in
the ganglion of the trigeminal nerve.  The virus travels down the nerve
to the eye due to any number of published causes such as stress,
sunlight, fever etc.

Considering it's final destination, I assume that the virus
specifically moves down the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve.
The ophthalmic branch travels through the superior orbital fissure and
passes through the orbit to reach the skin of the forehead and the top
of the head.

I have suffered 6 episodes of the disease over the last 7 years.  My
most recent outbreak of HSV Keratitis started with a cold.  That
evening, my wife gave me a very vigorous scalp massage.  By morning, I
was suffering from the mother of all headaches, reaching from my eyes,
up over my forehead, and to the top of my head, the same area serviced
by the ophthalmic/trigeminal nerve.  By the time the headache was
subsiding later in the day, I noticed the first signs of the eye
infection.

Could the irritation/inflammation of the trigeminal nerve, brought on
by the scalp massage be sufficient to set the virus in motion?

Thanks for any comments, Doug

I've honestly never heard of that before.

Have you been to the doctor to have any of this confirmed?

I don't know if that is what your problem is. You really need to see your
doctor. Don't mess around with your eyes, ok?

Hang in there,

Angela :)

Angela,
Thanks for your concern.  I am acutely aware of the dangers of this
desease, and at the first sign of an infection, I immediately see an
opthalmologist, have my eye examened, and begin treatment.  Even a
matter of hours makes a difference as to the damage this virus can do
to the cornea.

My post to this group was just to see if my theory about the scalp made
any sense to anyone.
