Does Abreva have any affect on Herpes outbreaks...Stan P
Al - 26 Feb 2006 04:16 GMT
You mean on genital herpes or oral?

On oral it cuts the healing time by about a day or so. On genital, it
doesnt do much if anything. At least not for me...

Even if it works, I would not spend 14 bucks on 3 grams of Abreva.
Forget about it.

Abreva was made to be used specifically for herpes herpes.

for genital or oral?? I spend close to $14 on a perscription
Al - 08 Mar 2006 05:50 GMT
Well Abreva in my area is $18.00 for a tube, but as far as a
prescription it would cost me 25.00 for a name brand if I needed one
with my coverage. I'm already taking 3 non herpes related
prescriptions, so I really don't want to add something else. I just
deal with my outbreaks and cry, and complain to everyone else.

Q.  Can Abreva ® be used to treat genital herpes, canker sores or
shingles? Can I use this on the cracks that form in the corners of
my mouth?

A.    No, Abreva ® is indicated only for the treatment of cold sores
caused by Herpes Simplex.

I HAVE A CURE FOR ORAL HERPES!!
Ok, Abreva I've only used a few times and it's only good a first symptoms.
Oral Herpes only.
The best thing to have around for symptoms is Acyclovir.  Go to your doctor
and tell him you want the cream, and tell him/her you also want the pills.
At first sign you start putting on the cream and start taking the pills.  20
years of experimenting, believe me this is your only chance of stopping it
dead in the tracks.

Now for the CURE or Prevention. There are  many things that  can cause a
breakout.I have found one sure thing that causes my body to breakout, MSG.
MonoSodium Glutamate found commonly in snacks and chinese food.  In fact, In
the last 4 years I had one cold sore.  I went to a Thai Restaurant, and I
didn't think Thai Restaurants used MSG, the next day I broke out with a sore,
I called the restaurant and asked if they used it in their food and they said
yes.  Beware of any snack that is flavored such as Doritos.  Check every
package.  Believe me, I have been able to avoid these annoying breakouts.

Since you can't always know if there is MSG because sometimes they just don't
know in some restaurants, they you take the Acyclovir at first sign.  It's
usually a slight headache and fever and then the tingly sensation.
Please let me know if anyone else has found this to be true.

I forgot the other main cause of the oral herpes is the sun.  You must always
have a lip balm that has spf30 or higher.  I have them everywhere, never
leave home without it.  This is your other big enemy.

Studies have looked at the active ingredient against HSV1 and HSV2 and
IIRC it is effective against both, but thats not surprising for any
herpetic med to advance.

However thats not the entire story and there is the issue of the
formulation its mixed up in and how suitable or useful that would be for
keeping the active ingredient in the right place. If I remember correctly
thats the major issue biologically.

I'm late late late to this thread but want to throw my 2 cents in
anyway. As has been said already, Abreva is FDA approved for Oral
Herpes only. So you won't find any official notices on any sites
recommending it for Genital Herp.  However, I've seen this question
asked here before as well as other discussion groups and apparently
some of the people that have tried it have gotten excellent results.
As you can see from earlier posts to this thread, that's not always
the case. I don't usually recommend anything the FDA doesn't recommend
but,  in this case, I don't see how it can hurt to try it.  Yes it's
expensive for a tiny tube but not as expensive as prescription Zovirax
cream. Plus, that tiny tube goes a long way. You'll be surprised.  And
I know a couple of people who claim it works much better than Zovirax.
Look at it as an experiment. If it doesn't work, consider your $15 an
education expense. On the other hand, if it works as well for you as
it has for some other people, you're ahead of the game.
oh! and let us know how your experiment turns out  :-)
