Howdy - I've been lurking for a few days, ever since my girlfriend told me
she has genital herpes as our relationship was headed towards, well, when
such a revelation would be relevant.
She has very rare flair-ups and said she dated a guy for 4 years quite a
while ago who never got it. From what I gather from reading here and
websites, I probably won't catch it with a few precautions (we're in our
mid-40s). That's good to hear as I love this woman and would not want to
give her up - I don't exactly want herpes either. But it seems to be far
from the end of the world if I were to catch it.
Anyway, thanks to all for your posts - this seems to be one of the few
usenet places not infested with trolls.
Perhaps I shouldn't have written that...

Hi Tim,
Never mention the "T" word!!! Unfortunately, they do come a-knocking. But
we just ignore them and they go away for awhile.
No one wants herpes. But, the balance lies in how much you love your
partner. Is she worth it? If you say yes, then there you go. Herpes is no
big deal but we would rather not have it. Mostly the problem is the social
stigma. Some have a hard time with the virus itself, but there are ways
around those problems.
I think it's great that you are here looking for information. :)
Take care,
ar

Tim,
There is no guarantee that you will never get herpes from your girlfriend.
One thing that you might not be aware of is that there are many people that
have herpes that don't know it because they don't have signs or symptoms.
So, I think if I were you . . . I might want to rule out if I already had it
or not by getting tested.
In the meantime . . . I think it's great that you see this girl for who she
is and not what she has.
It's so important! You are more than welcome to read our story if you'd
like. I am currently married to somebody that doesn't have genital herpes.
