Hi everyone,

Just coming through my first attack.  This little gift wasn't what I
was expecting from a romantic trist with ex-girlfriend in Paris but
c'est la vie, right?  So as a new member of this exclusive and secret
group, I have some questions:
1) I had about 6-8 "pimples" on my stuff.  Is that a light, medium or
bad out-break.

2) as I said, it is just about cleared up but then one more seems to
have popped up.  From what I read that doesn't make sense.  Could it be
a second OB before the first is finished.  Anyone ever experienced
something like that?

3)  I'm curious about the references to oranges and assorted nuts as
triggers for an OB.  Also, what about cheese, yogurt?  Any validity to
the idea that avoiding these will help avoid OB or would you say it is
all person to person?  What are some other triggers people have
experienced.  Is there a list somewhere?

4)  l-Lysine?  Argenine?  What's the story there? Any other
dietary/supplement advice?

5) Perl, appreciate your scientific papers but as lay person, I have no
idea what you are talking about... Should i be bathing in Wheat-germ?
Or should I be eating it?  Smoking it? Wearing it?

6) anyone have an idea of an expected release date of Herpevac?

7) anyone on valtrex, practicing safe sex and still transmitted the
virus to there partner?  If so, can I have some details?  Was it after
years, did you get a little lazy with precautions?  I've seen the
literature that says out of 750 couples, 2% in the same situation
managed to do so over the course of 8 months. That is from the Valtrex
site.

8)  Is there any value in applying a topical cleanser, rubbing alcohol,
to my pelvic region before sex (while adhereing to all other safety
measure?)

9)  Any reasons not to go on suppressive therapy if I can get it
through insurance and don't take any other medicines?

10)  Valtrex and alcohol?  harmful to the liver?

11)  Cold sore creams good for the undercarriage as well?

12)  would someone be contagious after exposure to the virus but before
the first outbreak/symptoms.

If anyone can shed some light on these questions, I would appreciate
it.  What a slap inthe face to get diagnosed with this.  Really changes
your perspective on the world.  I think of the poor people who've been
diagnosed with something much worse just because they relations with
the "wrong" person.  Yikes!

Its really nice to know there is a group like this so to all of you who
regularly contribute, Thank you!!!

It's hard to tell really since outbreaks vary from person to person.

Sometimes outbreaks can come on back to back.. everybody is different.

Everybody has different triggers. I know that stress can sometimes be a
trigger for me. As for what foods to eat or avoid.. it's all relative. I eat
whatever I want and it doesn't pose a problem for me at all.

There isn't any clinical proof that any of this does anything for the herpes
virus.. so don't be dissapointed if you try it and it doesn't work for you..
because it didn't work for me. All you can do is give it a try.. you
certainly have nothing to lose in that regard.

What do you mean?

As far as I know I did not transmit herpes to my husband while I was on
suppressive therapy.

No, no value at all.

Are you thinking about going on suppressive therapy and if so.. why? (I'd
like to know your reasons because I don't really understand your question.)

> 10)  Valtrex and alcohol?  harmful to the liver?

Valtrex is not harmful to your liver. If you drink too much alcohol it can
cause problems for your liver. Why do you ask?

> 11)  Cold sore creams good for the undercarriage as well?

No, it's better to keep the area clean and dry.

> 12)  would someone be contagious after exposure to the virus but before

A person either has herpes or they don't have it.

Hang in there,

Angela :)

1) I had about 6-8 "pimples" on my stuff.  Is that a light, medium or

In my case 6-8 would be a big outbreak, usually I get 3-4; three
together and one alone etc. Everyone is different though.

Mine often do that...a few then a couple more and then sometimes there
is a lag in a week and then more, i have strange outbreaks.. everybody
is different.

My triggers seem to be peanuts, caffeine and stress

Peanuts do have a high Lysine ratio so maybe some truth...

What is a herpevac? I know they have an HPV vaccine, but its not really
out yet. I wasnt aware of one for herpes. Even if there is, thats only
good for people that dont have it yet.

Personally I've tried using Abreva on my genital herpes and it didnt
really do much.

You can still transmit it without symptoms even if you havent had your
primary yet, if thats what you mean.

Hi Angela,
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
Let me clarify a few things...

> 6) anyone have an idea of an expected release date of Herpevac?

What do you mean?
Herpevac is a vaccine for women undergoing clinical trials right now
http://www.herpesvaccine.nih.gov/dmid/stds/herpevac/studyover_faqs.htm
Just wondering if someone knew how long these things take to come to
the market from this stage in development.  Looks like this is in the
final stages...

As far as I know I did not transmit herpes to my husband while I was on
suppressive therapy.

Do you mind if I ask how long you were together and on suppressive
therapy?  My current GF has not shown any signs yet so I'm quite
curious about this.  When we make a decision, I want to have as much
info as possible.  I was under the impression that out sex life was
over.  therefore I was happy to read the Valtrex trial info.

> 9)  Any reasons not to go on suppressive therapy if I can get it
> through insurance and don't take any other medicines?

Are you thinking about going on suppressive therapy and if so.. why?
(I'd
like to know your reasons because I don't really understand your
question.)

I'm thinking of suppressive therapy so as to not transmit it to my GF.
I'm just wondering why someone wouldn't go on Suppressive Therapy if
they could.  Has anyone noticed very bad side effects?  There doesn't
seen to be a decrease in effectiveness.  I'm really just wondering
about people's feelings on it.

> 10)  Valtrex and alcohol?  harmful to the liver?

Valtrex is not harmful to your liver. If you drink too much alcohol it
can
cause problems for your liver. Why do you ask?

Some drugs combine very badly with alcohol.  Aceteminaphen for example.
Turns to poison in the liver. I haven't found anything that says
Valtrex and alcohol are particularly bad...

> 12)  would someone be contagious after exposure to the virus but before
> the first outbreak/symptoms.

A person either has herpes or they don't have it.

So after the first exposure, one could be contagious the next day?

Hi Mike,

I have to make a correction. I meant that Peanuts have a high Arguinine
ratio not Lysine.

Hi Al,
Thanks for your input!  I eat mixed nuts every day so I gonna stick to
that and see if there are any problems.  I seem to really like the
foods everyone says are bad for this condition ;(

That's me too!! I eat it all pretty much and don't get any outbreaks. And I
have genital herpes type-2. Just goes to show you that everybody is
different.

By all means if you happen to get outbreaks eating certain foods see what
you can do to figure it out and go from there. But for the most part I'd be
willing to bet that it's going to be stress that will get you more so that
any foods.

You don't get any outbreaks Angela?  Are you on Valtrex?  I get these
shooting pain in the nether regions as well and they are quite
annoying.  Like getting bitten by a bug.  Are they just around during
outbreaks or will they always be around?

Also does anyone know if it is the caffeine in coffee that is bad or
just coffee in general.  I could switch to tea but that still has
caffeine.
stan - 20 Feb 2006 15:19 GMT
If any one wants to know about valtrex. ask me. i know all about it. it
is great stuff and it doesn't harm anything. you should start taking
valtrex if you are feeling sick or stressed because that is when the
most frequent outbreaks occur.
Angela S. - 20 Feb 2006 16:37 GMT
> You don't get any outbreaks Angela?

I don't get them like I used to. I might get one or two in a year but mostly
not at all. I have my history over on my herpes bio --
http://www.yoshi2me.com/herpes-biography.html -- maybe reading that will
help you. :)

> Are you on Valtrex?

In the beginning I treated my outbreaks as I got them. Eventually I went on
suppressive therapy for two years. That helped me a lot! Today it is not
necessary for me to be on suppression because I don't get outbreaks all the
time like I used to AND because my husband doesn't care if he ever contracts
it from me. The only time I am on suppression these days is the last six
weeks of my pregnancies. :)

Only time will tell. How long have you had herpes again?

I drink coffee every morning and they do not cause me to have outbreaks at
all. (fyi)

Hope this helps,

Angela :)

I knew what Herpevac was but I was not sure what your question meant
exactly.. sorry about that. You might try writing to them and asking them
how long it will take?

I was on suppressive therapy for two years. When hubby and I were having sex
in the beginning of our relationship we also used condoms. It wasn't until
we were married that we through out the condoms and I stopped suppressive
therapy.

I didn't experience any of the possible side effects while on suppression. I
think it's a great thing to do if you are trying to keep your girlfriend
from contracting it from you. What does she think of all this?

I honestly don't know.. I would imagine that it's fine. I am an occasional
drinker and it never caused any problems for me while I was on suppressive
therapy for two years.

A person is either going to contract it or they won't contract it. It
sometimes takes a few days for the antibodies to build up once it's been
contracted.

An excellent resource that you might want to take a look at is the free
herpes handbook over on www.westoverheights.com -- I think that will help to
explain a lot for you.

Hope this helps,

Angela :)

Easy; buy a bottle of Vitamin E oil made from Wheat germ,
brake a couple of capsules on your sores; Purchase, as well,
a bottle of alfalfa from any farmacy; take a few pills and
make a powder from them, then sprinkle a little alfalfa powder on top
of that vitamin E on the sores.
