Robert McDonald - 22 Dec 2005 12:45 GMT Might someone be contagious if they definitely have oral herpes but have not had a blister for some time?
Thanks.
Bob

I maybe wrong though get tested and see is my advice!

Robert McDonald - 22 Dec 2005 14:25 GMT But .. is Oral herpes contagious when there is no blister? That is my question.

IMHO I think the chances are much less when there is no blisters but the risk is still there just the same...... If your gonna catch it your gonna catch it, maybe bad advice saying that though.
my GF has HPV, I can't have sex with her ever again without the risk of catching it, im not gonna let it ruin my life with worry though, chickenpox hurts like hell, if I can live with that for a week then im sure I can live with other things... even though it may never happen to me, it could happen tomorrow... not many people worry about such things, a bit more serious with STD's... The risk is always there if one partner has the virus, no risk if you both get tested and are clear..
I would say it doesn't really matter blister or not, going on what ive read the virus is always there in the skin, so would doubt its gonna matter much at the end of the day. Its skin to skin contact which does it, if you can live with sores for a few weeks a year then you really do not have much to worry about, though of course being infected means you can pass it onto others also.
I am just a regular guy, I knew nothing about it all until a couple of weeks ago, IMHO, if you can get a year of "joy" with a few weeks of "pain" then its your choice to make. Just be honest if you change partner that you may have STD's.

You say you are "a regular guy." I am interested in a medically or scientifically based opinion, something research rather than opinion-based.
Bob.

If you dont want to catch the virus or pass it on then dont have sex again.

>>> But .. is Oral herpes contagious when there is no blister? That is my >>> question. [quoted text clipped - 42 lines] >>>> >>>> Chris exxos - 22 Dec 2005 16:32 GMT Actually heres a nice way of looking at it....
say you partner has the flu, do you kiss or not, chances are that if you do you will get the flu also. dont kiss and the chances are a lot less. Even when your partner is "better" he/she could still have the flu virus in her system for weeks afterwards even though he/she may "look" better the virus is still there.
It is my opinion that "being better" is less likely for you to become infected but the risk is there nevertheless... If it makes you feel better my gf has warts and sores and I still have sex with her. its my choice to make. I had sex with her even before she knew anything was up.... was too late for me in anycase..
If you want solid advise goto your clinic, you can often just talk to someone there and/or get tested..... I could break out in warts or sores tomorrow, then again I might never have them... Don't let it bugger up your life, you can get treated even though there is no cure. The guy who my my GF got it from hadn't even been with a girl for over a year apparently, he didnt even know he had it and hes not had a outbreak yet.
Persoanlly im tired of worrying about everything, my new way for 2006 is get on and get over it, some years I spend most of it with the flu, the next few years I don't get it at all. STD's are the same, just a virus, no cure to the common cold either, cold and flu sux but not many people worry about how many times they catch it each year... just deal with it when it happens, enjoy it while it doesn't. Most of all be honest with future partners.

Angela S. - 27 Dec 2005 18:57 GMT The virus has to actually travel to the surface of the skin and be active. Sometimes that will present as an outbreak and sometimes it will not. People that do not have outbreaks can still pass the virus through what is called asymptomatic shedding.
HPV and HSV are two completely different STDS.
Hope this helps,
Angela :)

Read the free herpes handbook online over on www.westoverheights.com
That should help,

Hang in there,

Grant - 22 Dec 2005 18:55 GMT Hi Robert,
Here's the truth:
The herpes virus lives in the nerve ganglia that service the area infected. For oral herpes, the nerve bundle is located...well, I can't remember. Anyway, the virus lives there. There is no cure. People with herpes have it for life.
For reasons that differ from person to person, the virus will become active and travel through the nerves to the skin's surface. Sometimes, there is enough virus present to create an actual, visible outbreak. But other times, there is not. However, the virus has still traveled to the skin and therefore, the person is contagious. This is called asymptomatic shedding because there are no symptoms.
The good news is that the longer a person has herpes, the less they shed asymptomatically. Overtime, the body becomes an expert in herpes and will work hard to keep the virus in the nerve bundle where it belongs.
So, the answer to your question is, "maybe." You will not know when a person is shedding. Heck, they won't know, either. But this is really only about 3% of the time. So, it's not like it's constant.
The other thing to know is that the vast majority of people already have type 1 herpes so it might be a good idea to get yourself tested before deciding if it's possible to catch what someone else has...you might just already have it.

> Hi Robert, > [quoted text clipped - 48 lines] >> >>Bob Al - 23 Dec 2005 03:04 GMT Just wanted to add that I have genital herpes and oral herpes, as well as some other viruses that are of that family such as Epstein Barr and the chickenpox virus as well as a relative (HPV). With Epstein Barr (EBV) for instance, you carry the virus in the nerves, and it is shed in saliva. That means that if I kiss someone I can give it to them without their knowing it whether or not I am having symptoms. EBV has its primary as Mono, and recurs in the form of fatigue and dizziness, but is communicable with or without symptoms just as simplex is. The chickenpox virus (Zoster) has its primary as chickenpox and recurs as shingles. I know chickenpox is contagious, but I am not sure about shingles. Any herpes virus is contagious and has both symptomatic and asymptomatic shedding as well as being at least some what recurrent. HPV is not a herpes virus but has similar properties and is recurrent and stays for life as herpes does.
As Ar was saying, you can get oral herpes from asymptomatic shedding, although the chance is less. I guess it stands to reason, because I don't remember kissing anyone with a coldsore and somehow I still ended up with oral herpes, but in a mild way. I often get the coldsores slightly inside the lips or where they meet so its less visible.

Yes, someone who has never had chickenpox can get it from someone who has an active shingles virus.
ar
Al - 24 Dec 2005 00:52 GMT Okay that's good to know ar. I guess I am quite a herpster now with all these herpes viruses! Its funny how you never hear about Cytomegalo virus, and types 6,7,8 either. I think Cytomegalo and type 8 are more prone to people with HIV, and types 6 and 7 are more common in third world countries and from what I heard mostly childhood diseases. People seem to talk most about simplex, then zoster then Epstein Barr also HPV is popular although not a herpes virus.
