Hi Chris,
I hate to break this to you and your friend, but cold sores ARE herpes. Herpes
simplex type 1 and type 2 are nearly identical. Type 1 can be found orally
(cold sores) and genitally. Type 2 tends to stay in the genital area. So, your
friend already has it.
The rash may or may not be herpes. Rashes can be caused by a multitude of
things. Only a doctor can really help sort it out.
Most people who have herpes don't know they have it. So, no, it isn't the end
of the world. Something like 90% of the population has herpes. Yes, she can
pass it on. Kissing, of course, is how most oral infections are passed on. But
she can also pass it on to someone's genitals through oral sex. So, it would be
important for your friend to learn more about herpes. And no, there is no cure.
Take care,
ar

Hi Chris,
Another thing to consider is that if a person has oral herpes (cold sores)
which are usually hsv1, it is unlikely that the herpes will spread to
different areas if the person has already built up antibodies to herpes. It
is possible for herpes to follow a different nerve path however. So a person
can get a cold sore on the bottom lip and then the next time on the top lip
or the nostril or the skin below the lip. It doesn't mean that it spread it
just means that herpes is following a different path. Having genital herpes
I know this happens, because sometimes I get outbreaks at the top of the
buttocks, sometimes the inner thighs, sometimes the genitals and sometimes
the pubic area.
As ar was saying, cold sores ARE herpes, so this is something to keep in
mind. I suggest that you read www.westoverheights.com because it has alot of
information on herpes. Also as mentioned prior about 90% of the US
population has some kind of herpes whether it be simplex oral or genital,
Epstein Barr, chickenpox/shingles, or other. Having herpes is not the end of
the world. I have it, my girlfriend has it, and three of my close family
members and relatives have it, life goes on. Most people with herpes are
leading healthy and rewarding lives.
Have a good day,
Al
