Hello,

I have a new party who has informed me she has herpes.  Not even sure
what kind.

We always use condoms.

What else can I do to protect myself?

Is there a natural antiviral someone can take who has it?  Can I take
something to prevent getting it?

Any help or suggestions where to look?

Thanks,

There's honestly not much you can do except practice common sense.  Now your
partner could take one of the many antivirals on the market.  If she takes them
every day, they will cut down on the times she is contagious.  However, I see
you're in Europe and I'm not sure what your drug options are where you are.

Two years ago I started dating a woman and she told me that she had
herpes. I was confused at the time and came to this group. The advice
I got was 1) get myself properly tested and 2) don’t let herpes stop
me if I really care for this girl. I followed the group’s advice.

Unfortunately, our relationship has recently come to an end. However,
I'm very glad I followed the advice from this group. Herpes had an
impact on our relationship early on, but it lessoned as time went by.
We were very cautious at first but became less careful with protection
after we both became more comfortable with the situation.

In the beginning, I always wore a condom and boxer shorts for
intercourse. We were both careful about not touching my genital area
if our hands had just touched her. We kept wet wipes near the bed.
After sex I would wash up thoroughly. I used a dental dam for oral sex
on her but neither of us liked it much after the first few times. We
also tried a female condom once or twice. The protection became part
of the routine and didn't bother me very much; however it did make my
girl feel self conscious at times. During the past year of our
relationship we were less cautious. I stopped wearing the boxer shorts
and we often went without protection for oral sex and intercourse.

We abstained from intercourse during her outbreaks but we still found
ways to pleasure each other. Although she was never tested, we
believed she had HSV-1 genitally. She had infrequent outbreaks and
only took Valtrex when she felt an outbreak coming on.

I haven't developed any signs of herpes and I believe that I'm
unaffected. A recent blood test returned negative results for HSV-1
and HSV-2 but I'll get tested again sixteen weeks from my last
exposure.

Hi,

I think most people who have had several outbreaks can feel them coming on.
I usually get an extremely intense itch (not painful) that last about three
seconds. When this happens I am sure to get an outbreak in a few days. Talk
to your partner about whether she gets a cue of some kind from her body.
