I am H-free male, and my potential partner was exposed to Herpes by her
loving ex-husband who neglected to tell her he knew he had outbreaks.  I
have loved this woman for years and now that we can finally be together this
virus or the potential of it is in between us.

She has had a test done that indicates presence of HSV-1 and HSV-2
antibodies, but she has never had any outbreaks or symptoms, and her doctor
told her she shouldn't bother to even mention it to me...of course being the
wonderful loving woman she is, she did tell me all about this and what her
doctor said.  I recommended she come here and learn as much as she can.

Is there any chance, in the considered opinion of the professionals and
others here that she could have anitbodies and not have contracted a
communicable virus?  I am wishful, but not all that optimistic about the
answers.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Bad news first. She wouldn't have antibodies without being infected.
Good news though, that doesn't mean you're destined for infection.
There are many many discordant couples in the world who never seem to
transfer the virus. In fact, just knowing her status brings the risk
down because now you know to defend against it.  If you were to move
on, the next person you become involved with could very likely be
infected without knowing it. Lots of people are, you know. And you'd
be right back in the same boat without knowing it.
Believe me, if she's worth keeping without herpes, she's also worth
keeping with it. The more you learn about it, the more you'll realize
it can/should be a non-issue in a committed relationship.

...... and by the way, unless you've had a blood test to be sure, you
shouldn't bet on that "H-free" stuff.  Lack of symptoms is no
guarantee of lack of infection. In fact, studies have shown that as
many as 90% of infected individuals don't realize their status because
they either have no symptoms at all or symptoms so mild they go
unnoticed.
Get a blood test so you'll know for sure. If you're hsv1 and 2
positive, you and your girlfriend wlll have even less of a non-issue
to deal with than your do already.

I'm always surprised by the crap that doctors come up with.  If you have
antibodies, you have herpes.  And yes, she can pass it on to you through
asymptomatic shedding.

However, you should have a herpes blood test as well.  You might also already
have the virus and not know about it.

Take care,
ar

I appreciate the feedback here.  I am considering the risk and it's not an
easy decision.  It should be a crime to know you have the virus and not tell
someone.  That would lead to less spread and less angst.
