FOOD IS MEDICINE

Twenty ago I got herpes and it was awful. I think I got it from my
girlfriend during oral because it was very slight--indicating Type I. On the
other hand I had a lower back injury at the same time which was suspicious.
Perhaps the virus was dormant in my lower back and I had been an
asymptomatic carrier. Who knows? "Oh, it's probably herpes," the doctor said
nonchalantly. "There is nothing that can be done for it, either." Over the
course of a year marked by continual recurrent infections I visited several
physicians. "Tests show that vitamin C can improve your immunity," said one.
"You're getting too worked up about this," cautioned another. "There's a
link between stress and recovery so lighten up and stop thinking about your
gonads." A third suggested light fitting underwear. Another warned against
hot tubs. Some recommended acyclovir others rejected it as ineffective,
which it was. None mentioned the only medicine that worked and worked well.

A year later I visited a naturopath who gave me the second opinion I longed
for. The prescription was to avoid eating citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, and
beans. Also to be avoided, as much as possible, were caffeine, alcohol, and
sugar. In addition, I was to eat less dairy foods and to cease from taking
megadosages of vitamin C. Following these directions about 70 percent of the
time, the results were immediate. The frequency of the recurrences dropped
from once every three weeks to less than twice every year.

Few physicians, today, deny the link between nutrition and immunity but few
of them are trained to treat illness with diet. This is a mystery to me. Is
modern medicine biased against treatments that don't cost a lot of money or
are doctors manipulated by the pharmaceuticals? Perhaps patients are
unwilling to try remedies that require time and effort on their part.

I know for a fact that doctors ignore the simple - change your diet - in favor
of giving you lots of pills that cost money.  I was rididled with illness till I
switched to a vegetarian raw food diet.  No more need for doctors.

However, not all foods will be triggers for all people.  A little bit of citrus
is good for you.  :)  So are a little bit of nuts, etc.  Dairy is bad all the
way around.

For me the triggers are caffeine, nuts, orange juice and stress, maybe in
some cases chocolate. My outbreaks are 2 times a month on average and for me
its the prodrome that is the worst. I get mild lesions most of the time. I
have noticed that when I limit the above the outbreaks get better, but still
bothersome. I'm under alot of stress again and depressed about some other
things so I might have to go on antidepressants. I hope that's not going to
give me outbreaks now.

Interesting ~

I don't have triggers and I don't get flare ups like I used to. If I do get
an occasional outbreak I take Valtrex and the outbreak is gone within three
days. Since I have two weeks left of my pregnancy I prefer to stick with
what is proven to reduce asymptomatic shedding as well as outbreaks - ie:
suppressive therapy in order to have a picture perfect labor and delivery
without all the drama.

But drama is what makes life interesting! Just kidding... :o) Seriously
Angela, I really don't know why I have such a problem at times, but I do
have a low pain threshold and I also tend to get more sick than most people.
I remember years ago when I got Epstein Barr, I was bed ridden for 3 months
and didn't full recover for 1 year. My mother told me that when I was 5 and
had chicken pox I was very sick. Apparently I am not able to recover that
well from herpes viruses.

And I am so very sorry that this is such a problem for you Al..

Hopefully one day you can be done with it all and find yourself in no more
pain.

By the way ~ It was nice chatting with you on yahoo instant messenger
tonight.

Hope you had a lovely dinner.

Hi Angela,

Yes it was nice to chat with you also. We had manicotti and sausage for
dinner...it was really good! Then my aunt made this delicious apple and
peach cobbler. She's the same aunt with the chocolate bundt cake. I'm eating
alot, now that its getting colder outside and starting to gain weight again,
gotta cut down!
