I recently had oral contact with a woman. I told her that I did not
want her to perform oral sex but she placed her mouth on my penis
anyway. That contact was fairly brief but it did happen. At first I put
it out of my mind but a few days later I started to worry about the
encounter. At that time the very tip of my penis hurt so I went to the
doctor who did a urine test and said my WBC was high (> 10) so he gave
me some antibiotics. I asked him about diseases and basically had a
wait and see attitude. I became concerend about herpes after reading
about it. There is a lot of confusing information on the Internet so I
though maybe somebody here could help give me some direction. My penis
did begin to feel sensitive, sort of like a burning but I could not
nail it down to a specific spot. I wasn't sure if I was just
hyper-sensitive because of my anxiety or if there was some sensitivity
as the result of the antibiotics. I finally spoke about the encounter
to my wife and that made the symptoms go away. I spoke with my doctor
about it and he examined me and saw nothing. He said there was no easy
way to tell if I have herpes unless something shows up. Of course, now
I examine my penis every day. I did notice a small red bump (smaller
than  pin head) in some if the folds near the head but since I never
really spent much time examining it before I don't know if it was
always there or not. My question is, is there anyway if no obvious
symptons appear to be reasonably sure that I don't have herpes? I've
spoken to my wife and she understands that there could be a problem but
I would like to eliminate as much doubt as I can. My doctor did not
mention how to go forward from here. He did say there were some tests
but that if I have it I would know it so he didn't seem to interested
in doing any tests. It's been about 3 weeks since the encounter and
nothing dramatically obvious has shown up. Of course I still worry. I
don't want to hurt my wife.

Thanks

Your doctor is very uninformed.  I suggest you find a new one.

The majority of people who have herpes have no symptoms, have never had an
outbreak, and wouldn't know they have it at all until they pass it on to someone
else.

There are quite a few blood tests available.  The best is the Western Blot.  But
it is difficult to come by and your doctor definitely wouldn't know anything
about it.

It takes 12 to 16 weeks for herpes antibodies to show up in your blood which is
what the blood tests are looking for.  You can have a blood test now and if it
comes back negative then you know you didn't have it before your encounter.
Then have a blood test in a few months and if it is also negative, then you more
than likely don't have herpes.  A positive blood test now would show that you've
had herpes before this encounter.

The only problem is that a blood test can't show you WHERE you have herpes.  So,
someone who tests positive for type 1 could have it orally or genitally.  And
someone who tests positive for type 2 could assume they have it genitally - as
it is more rare to find it orally.

Take care,
ar
