Yes. What keeps herpes in check is the immune system. If a person has a
disease that affects the immune system, then the herpes virus may go crazy. As
a matter-of-fact, people with both HIV and herpes need to be on medication and
be rather careful.

Hmmm...now I'm thinking that there might be a very definite difference between
HIV and AIDS. AIDS would be a baaaaaaad problem for those with herpes. But
perhaps a well managed case of HIV wouldn't be so bad??

So you do not necessarily have to have aids to notice more outbreaks etc?
Meaning hiv does not necessarily have to advance to aids for the hsv virus to
become more frequent etc...??

Hi Rainrainrain ~
> So you do not necessarily have to have aids to notice more outbreaks etc?
No, and you don't necessarily have more herpes outbreaks just because you
have HIV or AIDS.
It just depends on what's going on with the individual, the medications they
are taking, and where they are at at that moment.

In some cases herpes outbreaks will be common and in other cases they won't
be so common. Each person is different.
Hang in there,
Angela ;-)

so if a person doesn't know they have hiv...this could be an idication? (more
outbreaks, longer outbreaks etc?)

I hesitate to answer that. Anyone suspecting that they have HIV or AIDS needs
to see a doctor for testing.
There are lots of things...LOTS OF THINGS that can cause the herpes virus to
become more active than normal.

Well the reason I ask is I am going in for my hiv results and trying to
reassure my self that outbreaks would be more severe and lengthy..(from what
I read) if it were positive......

Ah, okay. :) Unfortunately, the only thing I can tell you is that nothing is
definite. If someone is HIV positive and functioning well, then there might not
be any difference at all. My cousin has been HIV positive for about 15 years
and he has never gotten sick at all. Of course, I don't know if he has herpes.
But, here's hoping for a negative...

I don't think so. But I'm not sure.

Where are you reading all of this at? (I'm curious)

No, just because somebody has herpes outbreaks doesn't mean they have HIV or
AIDS. Just to be clear these are very different sexually transmitted
diseases.
Frequency and Intensity of herpes outbreaks varies from person to person no
matter what shape their health is in.. some will have more outbreaks than
others and some will not have that many outbreaks, etc.
Hang in there,

If the HIV infection has progressed to the stage of AIDS, then yes,
the symptoms of *any* additional infection would be worse.
M2 <---- not a doctor nor an expert on HIV but that's what would make
sense to me.

And I am sure there are other alot of things that can make it worse and more
frequent such as stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, little or no exercise,
illness like flu and colds, certain foods that have high arginine ratios. I
did and had all of these when I had my really bad outbreaks last winter. Now
I am pretty much guilty of only the stress and not enough exercise. I still
get frequent outbreaks...1-2 a month, but not as bad at all. My outbreaks
last 3-5 days now with minimal lesions and barely noticeable.

I just found out from another person that NO your herpes do not get worse if
you have hiv..they can but they do not have to.....

Sounds like we all agree on it then. We still don't know the
likelyhood, but I would think it would be just as likely as not.
A friend of mine is a nurse who specializes in cancer patients. She
once told me that her cancer patients who also have aids/herpes, tend
to autoinnoculate themselves often (to their fingers mostly).
