Greetings all,
My 8 year old daughter started having cold sore outbreaks on her mouth
(lip area...) several years back. In an effort to try and do what I
could as her father to make the lesions go away quickly, I purchased an
electronic device that is sold as a tool to quickly kill the emerging
lesion and sometimes prevent the lesion from developing. I don't have
it in front of me, but it's about 3 inches long, with 2 probes that
stick out. The theory is this: there is a battery inside, and if a
lesion is present you place the device so that the probes are on
straddling the lesion... you press the start button and supposedly the
device channels low voltage current across the lesion in one direction,
then it switches back the other direction, for about 5 seconds each way.
You do this several times throughout the day and it's supposed to kill
the virus (or at least disrupt it so it can't multiply).
Anyone have any info on this thing? I still use an antiviral otc cream
as well, but I was wondering if there was any science to back up the
claims of this thing actually helping.
It tears me up to have my beautiful young daughter deal with cold sores.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Joe,
What an interesting device. I can actually believe that it was working. In
some way, that makes sense. :)
There are antiviral medications out now that your daughter can take. A pill a
day is called suppression therapy and it will help to cut down on reoccurances
and shorten the length of any outbreaks she does have.
I'm sure you must have seen the commercials on tv for valtrex (assuming you
live in the USA).
So, ask your doctor if valtrex is alright for your daughter.
Take care,
ar

Ar, thanks for the info. As my daughter is only 8, I hesitate to begin
a daily suppressive medication... but will of course keep that in mind.
She just now is getting over a sinus infection, which I'm guessing may
have something to do with her getting this most recent (and rather
large) outbreak.
Thanks.

I know what device you are referring to and I hate to say this but it's
absolutely nothing more than a scam. There is *nothing* on the market today
that will kill the virus from the body - nothing. How you described the
device kind of reminds me of the old days when people used to get those
electric shock treatments for therapy.
If you want to help your daughter with her cold sores you might want to read
the "free herpes handbook" over on www.westoverheights.com - and that will
give you lots of things you can do to help her with her oral herpes.
Take Care,
Angela ;-)
