Hello,

I found this site while looking for some answers to questions my doctor
either won't or can't answer. I completed 52 (yes, 52) weeks of the Peg-
Intron almost 18 months ago. The treatment was really hard on me. It was all
worth is though. I have stayed undetectable and still counting, but I still
feel like crap all the time. Everything from my hands to my arms to my legs
ache all the time. I have been just taking way to much Advil for to long and
finally decided to see my doctor again. He tested me for arthritis and some
other things and when the test results came back negative he told me he would
refer me to a pain specialist citing that he would not treat any "chronic
pain" patients. This did me alot of good considering the only clinic I can
afford is his, which is based on income. So I am looking for answers in other
places.

Can anyone answer any of these questions? Please!

How long after completing the Peg-Intron should I continue to feel like crap?
How long can I look forward to being undectactable?
What is "chorinc hepatitis"? Does this suggest I could possibly never have to
do the treatment again?

I ask the last question because my mother keeps saying that I could be cured.
I keep trying to tell her that once you have Hep-C you have it, right?

In order:

- there's no set schedule for returning to "feeling good" status post-therapy.
Some of us recuperate quicker than others. For what it's worth, I'm still
feeling some effects 15 months post-therapy, but they continue to diminish
with time.

- if your viral load was indeed below detectable thresholds, and have remained
so since you completed therapy, the preponderance of data strongly suggests a
cure. There have been a number of studies on the durability of non-detectable
status over many years and they've been universally encouraging.

Note that this does require actual testing to confirm; just because you
*ended* therapy with undetectably low viral counts, unless you've tested clear
6 months or more later, your status is undetermined.

- chronic hepatitis is defined as the presence of virions in peripheral blood
6 months or later post-infection. This is an important distinction, as a fair
percentage of all infectees clear the virus on their own; further, initiation
of therapy prior to the chronic status has a much higher odds of success
regardless of genotype.

- the question of having to do the treatment again would be partially answered
by whether your "sustained viral response" still prevails. If you test
negative for active virions 18 months post-tx, you're almost assuredly cured;
if you test positive, then the ball would be back in your court.

- Finally, your mother is correct: if your treatment was entirely successful
and you no longer harbor active virus 18 months later, you're cured. Period.

Cheers

greyhackle,

Thank you so much for your response. It has been very encouraging. I tested
again at one year and was still undectable and had a liver functions test a
couple of weeks ago and it was fine. I was told four years ago by my doctors
that there was no cure for Hep-C. My doctor wants me to continue doing yearly
tests to make sure that I stay undectable but I am starting to wonder if he
has done his research.

I am glad to hear that you are feeling better with time. I continue to feel
like crap. I did find the Scheiring page on interfereon and saw RA was a
possible side effect. I now have to find out if RA is something that can be
hereditary. There is alot of arthritis on both sides of my family and my Aunt
recently tested positive for RA. I am not saying that I have it I am just
wondering if it is possible. At 24 years old it is really hard to hurt all
the time and extreemly angering to know my doctor is just assuming that I am
looking for pain meds because of my past drug use. I used for two years and
have been clean for four. I don't want pain meds I just want to not have to
be in pain every day.

Thank you again for your encouraging info. I am rather pesimistic and left
alone with my own thoughts for to long I tend to imagine  alot worse
possibilities.

Thanks again,

RHanson

Hi RH,

I didn't realize that you were only 24-- this seems rather young for
unexplained chronic pain, and for RA. Some doctors harbour a bit of
unprofessional prejudice against former druggies, so I'd suggest you get a
second opinion (you're clean, so past indescretions should not influence a
diagnosis, and should not mean that your'e treated with less attention than
any other patient).

Congratulations on a successfully "killing the dragon" and good luck getting
the pain problem resolved. You're right, it's hard to hurt all the time--
find another doctor who'll help identify the problem and treat it.

> Rhanson, I did 72 weeks on pegintron from feb 2002  to july 2003. I have no sides. Any sides i had were gone in 6 months . My main side was brain fog. Lots report lasting sides I have been hcv negitive ever since  You gave no time reference .How long off treatment . When was your last viral count, pcr post treatment. Most docs test 6 months post tx if your negitive you have the prize. In my experence if the virus is comming back its their  four weeks post tx . The standard is 6 months . Hcv wastes no time on the rebound .   Why dont you go to delphi forums , in the main index under support and recovery you will find say 6 hcv forums. Seekers hcv is the oldest. You can pose your question their . They have live chat from about 4 in the evening U.S EST or you can post as here . Got a feeling you will find lots like you. Thats a constant problem for many . Joint pain is not rare . Give time frames . How long off treatment ,last viral pcr post treatment . With no time ref its not possible to get an accurate answer . You could be cured . You left out the most important details .   eric

No he didn't, you missed them. He finished tx 18 months ago and has since
tested clear, so there would be no post-tx pcr, would there?
