My Doc prescribed Bactrim DS for a Urinary Tract Infection. Is this a safe
medication for people with advanced liver disease? It seems like I remember
reading that sulfa drugs should be avoided.

Thanks,
Brian

Wow. It doesn't take much looking around the web to come across a lot of
rather disturbing data on Bactrim DS, as well as for the two component drugs
therein. Product information clearly point out that liver disease is a caution
for the use of Bactrim DS.

Beyond that obvious issue, in the UK identical products ("Septra" and
"Septrin") caused such consternation due to side effects and deaths that
prescriptions now barely reach a few thousand annually.

So, obviously, I'm not a doctor, but if I was you, I'd be asking my doctor if
there is a different drug available - one that doesn't carry specific caution
statements for a compromised liver.

Good luck, Brian. And get better soon...
