So I go into the hopital practcally wearing a billboard that says, "I've got
HCV" because I've got a horror of infecting anyone.  The day I get home, the
Infectious Diseases nurse calls me.  Now, is everyone sitting down?  .....It
turns out one of the surgical nurses not only did not wear gloves, she
touched my wound while it was bleeding and she had an open sore!  How do you
spell stupid?????  I would almost say it serves her right if she gets
infected but I can't bring myself to be that mean.

Certainly in Standard Operating Procedures (unfortunate pun) the drill in
that scenario would have been for someone responsible for the task to remind
everyone remotely to do with touching you or instruments that your blood
presents a serious risk of infection.  Basic workplace safety and health
briefing required when working with a crew in heavy construction and the
like comes to mind.  Or on railroads, refineries, ships, etc.

hurry up and heal, now Thipper!

what year is it?   were you in a "twilight zone" episode?   If you
wind up with an abcess, I want you to promise to raise holy hell over
this nurse not taking proper precautions for YOUR health issues!!

Hopefully all will be will, but after what I saw my son go through
when he had major abdominal surgery, I don't have a lot of faith in
our medical professionals as far as them taking care not to infect
us.   And, of course, we don't really want anyone to contract the
virus from us, but it almost sounds like she was TRYING to get it!
geeze

take care, friend.   heal quickly and be well.

I know the feeling,Thip, had a similar experience only it wasn't one
of the nurses, it was a LAB TECH! Talk about what century are we in,
is right!

I reported her to the hospital and expressed my concern (tho I am
virus free today) that what if I had NOT been diagnosed and treated
the year before, I would have still been carrying all that
contaminated blood - I was horrified to see a Lab tech playing with my
IV, making it leak and my blood all over the tips of her fingers of
both hands. The hospital was very concerned about identifying who it
was so they could be given additional training in safety procedures.

Making the story wierder, a few months later I went to my regular doc
for bloodwork, walked in and now she was working THERE (I thought,
wowo the hospital must have fired her!)

This time she put on the gloves and prepped to take my blood, then
stretched up the tip of the finger and chopped it off with the
scissors, and proceded to use the bare finger to palpitate my vein and
so on. Go figure. Yeah you gotta look out for yourself....

What a story, but all too common these days. Cripes almighty, whatever
happened to "hospital clean?"

I hope you make a formal complaint to the hospital, the board, the state
health care dept. and whatever other "responsible" agencies you have.
That the nurse put herself at risk is shocking, but that she put you, the
patient, at risk by sloppy procedures is inexcusable.

I'll bet that, at the very least, you're looking forward to full mobility so
you can kick her a.s :-)

Take care, heal quickly and look forward to summer.

I did report it (and several other things) to the hospital administrator.
We'll see how (if) he responds).
