Well damn those hot keys, don't know what happened ot the post I was
writing previously!

Thip, thinkin of you, is the surgery stilll scheduled for Mar 16?
Getting close!

I keep thinking about how scared I was going into it - had never been
"under', not with 3 childbirths, never had surgery before etc. It was
truly a first for me and I was sooooooo scared going into it, even tho
I had the utmost faith in my doc etc...

What really stands out in my memory is how my "sweetheart" stood my my
side in the hospital until I was "under" - then left to go to work
because there was nothing to be achieved by him sitting around there
for hours and hours, and they had his number to call first.

And I can remember my first "conscious" thought, once awake, was seeing/
hearing my doc on the phone across the room from my bed in recovery
room, talking to him, telling him that I was awake, everything had
gone well, and when he could come in to see me.

Mostly I remember him coming to see me after the surgery, looking up
at him and saying "Baby, its really good to see you again.." and how
he leaned over buried his face on my chest and said, "Don't be saying
thiings like that or you're gonna make me cry.. "

Ok yeah a bit personal and whatever but I wish you well and hope you
are going into this with a great attitude understanding that it will
make your life better once you get thru it, tho it might take a
while...

Yep, still on for the 16th, dBo.  I've been sliced and diced so many
different ways I'm practically a Zipper Thipper.  Start with the splenectomy
and blood transfusion that gave me HCV....two C-sections, a total
hysterectomy, gall bladder...I think that's it.  Anyway, I can't say I'm
nervous, maybe a little anxious, and more than ready to get it over with!
Hubby died in '03 or he'd be there, a total wreck and depending on me to
help him stay in one piece.  :-)  My daughter and daughter-in-law will be
with me though.  Daughter's got nursing duty once I get home, to be spelled
by daughter-in-law as needed.  The doctor said I'd be down for the count for
6 to 8 weeks, so I'm claiming 4.  I'll be a rantin' ravin' lunatic if I have
to sit around here any longer than that.

Two questions:  I know they'll be rolling me right out of bed and making me
walk.  How long was it before you were able to walk with any degree of
confidence?  I have visions of myself shuffling around like a 90-year-old.
And how long will I need in-home help 24/7?

Day 1 post surgery - lets walk with the walker. Gee that went pretty
well, lets try it with the crutches....gee you're doing great, want to
try the "step"? Step up, step down, step up, step down"

Day 2 post surgery - You did so well yesterday want to try the stairs?
Grab your crutches. Went half way down the stairs, and back up again.

Day 3 they were going to let me go home, but my hemoglobin dropped/BP
dropped to 80/40 and they gave me a pint of blood which brought
everything right back up. So I went home on Day 4 (Sunday)

My sweetie went back to work on Monday, only about five mintues away.
Mom came up to hang out and help me wash my hair in the sink which
fellt great at that point.

In my case, the bathroom is a mere few steps from the bedroom, and the
kitchen just past there. So I was pretty much all set in that way,
didn't have to worry about stairs etc. I was pretty much just using
one crutch when I came home. Yes it was slow going, there were pain
drugs etc. I just took it slow & easy. Since it was only one crutch I
could still carry a cup of coffee etc. Honey came home from work at
night and took care of the cooking/dishes etc. I was spoiled rotten.

Home health aid came in daily the first week or so, then cut back to
maybe twice a week, to help me exercise the leg etc. I can't remember
exactly how long she kept coming but it wasn't all that long, I was
doing fine and it just wasn't necessary.
One day after I had been home a week or so, the "occupation therapist"
called while she was there and she talked to her....told her it wasn't
necessary....You want to what, come over and teach me how to get in
and out of the bath, put on my shoes etc? Sorry honey, you're a week
late and a dollar short, I took my first shower a week ago!! DOH!

I DID stay out of work for about 10 weeks, but my job requires me to
sit at a computer for 8 hours a day, and that might have been
problematic....besides which everyone kept telling me that I had short
term disablity coverage good for three months and I should take
advantage of it and stay out of work as long as I could, and give
myself a change to heal really well.

After 10 weeks I was pretty much ding-batty and out of things to read!
haha! You'll be walking with "confidence" very quickly, but you'll be
moving slow for a while.....bottom line. The good news is that as
promised, when you wake up from the surgery, you'll realize
immediately that the pain is gone!!!

Hey Dude,
it's almost time to become the BIONIC-HIPPER-THIPPER!  Hope all goes
well with you.  It's a good time for a tune-up, you'll be ready for
spring, with a little new spring in your step:)
take care,
Joe

Thanks, guys.  I went for the pre-op junk this morning.  The nurse said I'm
going to be the first person in the history of the hospital to get out the
second day after surgery.  I haven't even gone yet and I already want to go
home!

I wonder if I'll set off metal detectors?  I forgot to ask.  I have to clear
one every day at work.
