I take my last Riba pills on friday.  I'm too lazy to search the
archives so just thought I'd ask; are they any tips for going thru w/
drawls?  I'm taking 1 tab of codeine/tylenol every 3 to 4 hours.  I
pop my first one in the am about an hour before I get out of bed. and
take the last one about an hour before bed, average about 4-5 a day.
thanks, joe

Yikes - that's a lot of Vicodin. Should we call you "House"? ;-)

Speaking from my own experience, the only "withdrawal" symptoms were good
ones: I felt better and better with each passing day. The flu-ish feelings
were gone a few days after my last Peg shot, and the lingering nausea and
metallic taste to everything vanished within a few days after the last handful
of Riba a week later.

The most profound "withdrawal symptoms" were from rapidly improving blood
counts. After one week off the therapy drugs my hemoglobin went from 9.4 g/dl
to 10.9; by the end of the second week it was up to 12.4, I was taken off the
Epogen for the first time in 35 weeks, and I felt like I was 20 years younger
(which, considering I felt like a decrepit 70 year old while on therapy, was a
real game changer ;-)

Really, there were absolutely *no* bad feelings - it was all excellent. My
normal energy levels came back (and then some - I went a bit hyperthyroid for
a few weeks), I ate better - and actually enjoyed eating again - I slept
better, I could deal with people and their problems better, I could do
anything I wanted to do and feel good doing it. Family and friends picked up
on it immediately, it was that obvious.

But then I wasn't trying to kick a serious Vicodin habit :-(  I suspect that's
going to give you way more of a problem than being rid of the treatment drugs.
I had a bit milder of a Vicodin habit before my last back surgery about a
decade ago and I was advised to taper off over a week. You might give that a
try rather than just stopping short...

On the up side, you have to feel good about being done after going through a
full course of treatment. Use that to get you past this other problem...

Cheers

Thanks for the info Grey.  Guess I never really thought about
withdrawls when I started these pills, I just wanted the pain to go
away.  Anyway, I decided to try and cut my dose in half starting
today.  tonight I take my last Riba.  I am going to try and get off
the hydrocodone in 2 or 3 days instead of 2 or 3 weeks the dr.
suggested.  we'll see. take care, joe

Joe -- take it slow please.   vicodin can/will make you really sick if
you try to get off of it too fast..  be good to yourself, there is no
rush ya know :)

you might be right, I've done a little more research and it all says
withdrawl can be nasty business if you go too fast.  I'm ok today even
tho I have cut my usual dose in half.  I would expect if I was going
to have problems, I will feel it tonight.  If I'm ok in the am, I am
going to stick to 1/2 tab 3x's day for a day or 2 then cut it to 1/4
and see what happens.  If I go pysychotic, i'll let you know, :)

well, the first 2 days were ok, but today, when I cut the dose to 1/4,
i'm getting lots of body aches, some fever/chills and headaches.  I'm
going to try to stay on 1/4 every 3 hours for another day or 2 and
hopefully quit.

Thanks CJ, hey, I've been meaning to ask you,  what song is that Dylan
line from: "nothing was delivered"?  Many many years ago I, (like
everybody else) did a lot of Dylan songs as part of my repetoire back
before I threw in the towel for a steady paycheck and no soul.

Hmmm.  I think that Dylan put that song into his Basement Tapes collection,
but he let the Byrds record it on "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" back in '68, I
think.  Dylan toured with the Byrds for a while, using them as his stage
band more or less, and then the Band took on that role after Dylan's
recovery from his motorcycle accident.  Big Pink was essentially The Band's
expression of the transformation from the folk-ish to the country rock-ish
styles that Dylan underwent, too.  Big Pink was the name they gave to the
house in Woodstock NY where Dylan spent much of his time recovering, and
recording some of the songs that later came out on bootlegs and Basement
Tapes.  And the members of the Band recorded the album there, too.

My all time favourite Dylan song (or one of them anyway) is "My Back Pages"
which the Byrds also covered on that Sweetheart album.  Dylan was on tour in
'73 or '74 and the intro song for the first set was a very loud instrumental
version of  My Back Pages.  I can remember the shivvers going through my
whole body hearing it as I was sitting in my seat at Vancouver Coliseum.  I
am stuck in those years, musically.  Those types of songs are the ones I
still jingle jangle with on my Rickenbacker 12 and raunch out on with the
Gibson LP Deluxe.  Even those instruments are 'legacy' type instruments of
that era.  Just missing a Telecaster, but oh well, only so many arms and
legs, anyway.  LOL

cj, i'd love to talk to you more, but right now i'm jumpier than a
frog on a hot-plate going thru withdrawals from the vicodin.  i went
cold turkey this am.  i started cutting down on friday.  i figure if
the dr. said it usually takes 3 weeks, he doesn't know me, I'll do it
in 3 days. later

I made my previous post before reading the whole thread.  If you're
coping with the withdrawals without excercising then good on ya. Might
as well put up with it and get it over sooner.
Not nice though.  I well remember my own withdrawals after long term
methadone addiction (taken as a heroin substitute rather than for
pain).  Not pretty but it didn't kill me.

Hey Joe,
I don't know about the pain narcs, but other than that, eat well to build
up metabolism and blood, go for walks by yourself at first if you feel
socially out of it, and get plenty of rest.  And water when you think of it.
It will all get better.

Just take care of your health
   and get plenty of rest...

I know this might sound unrealistic at the moment but one way of
assisting with withdrawals is to take excercise.  I'm not offering it
as a cure all - merely as an assist.  Excercise gets the natural
endorphines going again.  The problem is that when taking an
opioid/opiate for a sustained period, the body ceases to produce (or
produces less) endorphines because the drugs do it for the body.
Unfortunately, when the drugs are stopped, there is a period of time
before the body starts producing them properly again.  This is the
period where withdrawals occur.  Excercise stimulates endorphine
production.
Ok, ok, I know.  How do you excercise when you feel like sh.t?  Well,
I suppose it's just about doing what you can and no more.  Thinking a
little more about it, maybe it would be better to stay on the opioids
a little longer until the post tx exhaustion has eased up a bit.  Then
you may be in a better position to do excercise to ease the
withdrawals.
All subject to doctor's opinion of course as he/she has all your
details and I don't.
