Hi, A friend of mine gave me this link: http://www.yourdnacompass.com/
to a website about a company that designs vitamim/mineral supplement
based on an anaylysis of your DNA.  He said he did it and he feels a
lot better.  Granted, he is not a hep-c'r, but I was wondering if
something like this would help us. I've been taking an occassional
vitamin and trying to eat right, but I don't see any real difference.
the only thing that really helps is lots of water.  (Sarah, you must
be proud:)

very proud :)
my doctor had me taking a multi vitamin (without iron!) and told me to
eat as healthy as I could.  Problem with many supplements is that some
of the things in them might be harmful to our already compromised
livers, or interfere with the way the meds work....   I made it a
practice to discuss anything I considered adding or changing with my
dr first -- but I was lucky and had a very good dr.   hopefully some
of the more well-read posters will weigh in here for you -- several of
our 'vets' have done tons of research on supplements and can give you
better advice than I can.

Well, that sounds fishy. Your DNA can't tell what vitamins you need,
that's not something genetic, but rather depends on your nutrition. In
general, supplements can't really replace the "real thing", that's been
shown time and time again by various studies. If you're in treatment, a
multivitamin can be very helpful because your nutrition may be seriously
out of whack. But don't be fooled by fancy claims. There is no actual
science behind this.

My BCLD told me ages ago to just take a plain-jane multivitamin/mineral
supplement without iron (ie., the generic equivalent of Centrum Silver).  I
cannot for the life of me see how analysing your DNA would determine what
nutrients your body needs.  He may feel a "lot better" but I suspect it's a
lot psychological.
