Anybody try Bendadryl for the itchies?  I have enough lotions and
potions on the shelf to run a drug store.  so far, the best lotion
I've found is Eucarin
Aquaphor, (THANKS TO FROGGER FOR THE SUGGESTION) but it doesn't work
for long,  sitting in a bath of cold water works great for a little
while.

benedryl is fine for the itchies :)  sorry we all forgot to suggest that!
they make a benedryl lotion also, might work for you!

try the Aveeno oatmeal baths for soaking in too, I bet they'd help.   baking
soda in your bath water....  corn starch on your itchies too maybe.

lots of things to try :)

The itching seems to be one of the few sides I didn't have a hard time
with - but dry skin was a bit troublesome and I found as time went by,
bathing less and less helped. The water, especially hot water just
dried my skin out more.

So I probably didn't smell great and my hair was a disaster, but as
the saying goes "if they can't take a joke..." well you know how it
goes... ;)

Seriously, the less bathing and water, the less the dry skin bothered
me, the less itching etc....

It'll make you sleepy  (it's diphenhydramine--Sominex, Tylenol PM), so be
careful.  I think the "fix" is about as temporary as any other.  The only
things that have worked for me for any length of time is a virtually
fat-free diet (ugh) and Sarna lotion (double ugh--it stinks).

Benadryl can certainly help. And avoiding hot water in the bath will as well.
Anything that pulls natural oils out of the skin is to be avoided if you're
battling dry skin. And staying well hydrated is very important.

Hydroxazine HCL - a prescription antihistamine - may help if the Benadryl is
inadequate...

Cheers

Benadryl would be worth a try.  The Hydroxyzine Grey mentioned worked
better for me.  I had major itching problems during tx and I know it
can make things rough.  There are a number of causes of itching during
tx and its not the same for everybody.  I assume yours is not
localized to one area so hydrocortisones wouldn't be of much use? Stay
on top of it.  It started off not too bad for me but got out of
controll and I had to take prednisone in order to finish tx because it
was decided my reaction was systemic.  Hopefully, you will find a
solution soon.  See a dermatologist if you can't get it under control
quickly.

Hey TC,
Just make sure what ever else you try, to be sure to keep your fingernails
well trimmed.  You don't want topical infections.  Your immune system is
crazy right now.  You might also want to try unscented olive oil soap in the
bath or shower.

keep up the good work, guy

Ya,  I use to love Kiss My Face, which is an olive oil soap, but it's
about
$4 a bar here and I'm too cheap and not quite desperate enough for
that at
the moment. Currently I like a British oatmeal soap, whos name
escapes
me... starts with a "C" I think, that I get at Wallgreens for a buck a
bar.

Hey Topcat, sorry Aquaphor didn't work for you, I still swear by it.
And it's the
only thing that has helped the paper-dry patches of skin I've
developed on
my hands and elbows lately.

And on a completely unrelated topic...

Anyone here have to take high blood pressure meds?  I started on them
around
Feb. and I just gave up on my 5th type cause every dang one has me
hurling bile
after about day 7.  Any suggestions for a scrip that wont send a rush
of yellow-green
thunder to the head???

cheers to all,

Hey Frogger
I have disystolic HBP.  I have been taking these three meds for quite a
while, and took them without cross-over effects during my 48 weeks of tx for
HCV.
Ramipril 10 mg, Felodipine 5 mg, and Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg.  The first
two are generic equivalents of Altace and Adalat.

Hope this helps.  You don't need to be chucking up all the time.  Are you
sure it is not the Ribavirin doing that?

I'm not on tx yet.  Was diagnosed in Jan of this year, had the biopsy
in March and I'm 1a, stage 1, level 1, at
35 years old and best bet is that I contracted at age 5 from a
transfusion.  Gastro doc says he wants me on
tx, but also says there's no rush so I'm trying to get myself better
sorted financially and physically before I go
to war.  Right now I'm thinking maybe 18 months from now I'll start
up.

If things take a dive, I'll go in earlier.  Itchies are getting worse,
and now I'm got edema in my feet which sucks but
I think that's from the high blood pressure which was also diagnosed
in January.  I've got to lose some weight and
I think some of my stamina will return.  I wasn't so tired before I
put on an extra 30 lbs.

cheers,
Frogger

hi

I've never had any problems with BP meds....  Benicar worked well for me, as
did Cozaar....  my doc just changed me again because of an atrial fib
episode so now I'm taking cardizem (sp? sorry too lazy to go look!),  but
those two didn't seem to cause me any side effects at all.

I take lisinopril 20 mg and no problems with it at all.

Recently added the diuretic hydrocholorthiazide 25 mg - only thing I
have noticed is that I seem to be retaining more fluid and bloating,
which is odd in light of the fact that this is supposed to eliminate
fluids, don't know if it is related or not, but I'm becoming tempted
to stop it and see what happens. I was fine on just the lisinopril for
a long time.

Sorry to hear you are having that problem, don't know what to suggest
- have you checked with these meds for things like shoudl you be
taking on empty stomach, full stomach, with fluids or that kind of
thing??? Morning vs evening?

I was on lisinopril and the added hydro two scripts ago.  Like all the
rest
things are fine until about day 10 when I start hurling on a regular
basis.

The latest flavor is 50mg daily of Atenolol, which came in a bottle
damn near covered in yellow warning labels that say things like:

"May cause drowsiness or dizziness"
"Obtain medical advice beforetaking nonprescriptions drugs...
interactions blah blah..
"It is very important that you take or use this EXACTLY AS DIRECTED...
"This drug might impair the ability to drive or operate machinery...
"Use care until you become familiar...

etc.

I love my GP doc, and she's in cahoots with my gastro so I know she
has my liver health
in mind when she prescribes things, I just wish I could find something
that wouldn't make
me gnarf.

At least the 25mg of Zoloft does it's job and doesn't make me sick.  I
guess it's better that I
don't have to bounce anxiety meds like I'm bouncing blood pressure
pills.

*sigh*

Hey Frogger,  sorry, I think you misunderstood my post,  So far,
Aquafer worked better than anything else, the problem is, it just
doesn't work for long, but I do appreciate your suggestion!!! Take
care.
