It seems my daughter may have HCV. AFAIK, she hasn't had it from birth but
doesn't have any glaring risk factors in her background. She does have
multiple ear piercings and had one short-term (3 months) relationship with a
sleazebag, but has never used drugs and has no tattoos. She used my razor
once. I figure it's either the sleazebag or the piercings.
Get this: She found out today when someone called from the place she
donated blood last month. The guy calls and wants to know if she's "under
treatment for her Hepatitis C." Naturally she freaked. If I could get my
hands on him I think I could cheerfully throttle the fool.
Anyway, she's going in to the health department for further testing and the
nurse there did say they have had "false positives" (although she did not
specify what kind) from this organization in the past. We're hoping like
crazy it's another false positive. This is the same daughter who was in the
house when her loving father chose to blow his brains out, and quite
frankly, she's been through enough.

Thip, you and your daughter have my prayers. This is one of my worst
nightmares. I found out about mine in about the same manner. I know you
don't need my help, but I would gladly assist you in teaching the
insensitive fool some manners. I hope it is just a mix-up in the lab.

Thipper, I'm so sorry to hear this. And, I'm completely and thoroughly
disgusted at the way so called "medical professionals" communicate with
their patients and the general public. There really needs to be some serious
education in the field because stories like yours are all too common.
Arrogant, ignorant, insensitive motherf..kers!

Try to focus on the positive-- she's young, it's probably a relatively new
infection and she's got a mom who is better educated in hcv than a lot of
doctors... plus, one that won't take any crap from the bureaucracy! But
let's hope it's one of those mysterious false positives.
Take care Thipper, and take care of your daughter. I know, neither of you
need this.
(((hugs to Thip)))

Thip, you and your daughter are in my thoughts and prayers... I went
thru the same sort of "worry" when I was first diagnosed, and told I
had probably had this for 30 years, and had had three children, Two
have been tested. The other one, who spent four years in the military,
15 months in Iraq, and has multiple tatoos has not been tested yet but
says he will soon. I was so scared that I may have passed it on to
them at birth.
While I cannot say for sure what my "contact" was, I can only say that
I worked as a dental assistant to an oral sugereon as well as a
medical assistant during the 70's.. I also was married to a
"questionable" man for many years, and never thought about things like
sharing razors etc - so many possibilites.
Wishing you daughter a clean bill of health, a false positive
determination - and if worst comes to worst and she DOES have Hep C I
wish you/her a short duration that is easily treatable or can wait for
better treatments to come along...

Hope its a false positive or at least just the antibodies and no vl.
If not she is young and probably hasn't had it long so her outlook
should be good.

Thanks, all of you. I really needed to vent. I called that idiot who told
her today and found out Georgia has some sort of tracking database. They
plug in the people who fit the criteria--20 to 30 years old and a few other
things--then place these calls. What was SUPPOSED to have happened is that
this donor organization was to have contacted her first with the good news.
They didn't, so he just went through his little spiel about "you have HCV
and here are your options" like a bull in a china closet. Sheesh. I tried
to get him to see they need some sort of backup system so these things don't
happen, as well as a method of tracking the false positives so they can
target which organizations are doing sloppy work. But since he's a State
worker, he's just a little drone muddling his way toward retirement and has
lost the capacity to think outside the box. I'm a State worker too, by the
way, and people like him are a dime a dozen. I just happen to be an
independent, freethinking old.....witch.
Anyway, we're going to have all the tests re-run in a week, and then we'll
take it from there. How loud can we all yell, "SNAFU!"

About as loud as we can all yell "FUBAR!"
Either way, I'm hoping for a false positive, Thipper...
