In Chronic Hepatitis C Silymarin Does Not Affect Virus Activity Or ALT
Levels

I don't think this news is anything monumental, so milk thistle
doesn't stop Hep C but does seem to alleviate symptoms in some, but
what's the group thought? Anyone here had good/bad/neutral experience
with it?
cheers,

From the non article:
"The better scores in a small number of symptoms among silymarin users
compared to non-users are insufficient to support the value of this
alternative therapy, the authors conclude. Compelling information can
come only if a scientifically valid study is performed. "Currently in
progress, therefore, is a properly designed prospective, randomized,
controlled trial in which a fully characterized, purified and
standardized silymarin formulation is being evaluated," they report. "
They obviously need to do a more scientific study.

Neutral for me I think. Didn't know if it helped but it didn't seem
to hurt. But I think maybe there was some psychological benefit at
least in terms of empowerment. Trying to do something to protect a
vital organ.

I don't know if it was the milk thistle use or a combination of that with a
couple of other herbs, but my labs are showing ALT and AST as normal, and I
have no symptoms from my chronic Hep C that I can tell. Believe me, I am
thinking about it all the time. No aches, pains or fever. Sleep 8 hrs at
night, enough to get me through the day without a long nap. (1b, tx in '04 -

One thing to keep in mind with Milk Thistle:
I found an article once somewhere on the web (I think the analysis was
done in Chicago) where it was found that it slows down the action of a
particular liver enzyme. Then they listed some of the very few drugs
that are metabolized by this enzyme and said not to take milk thistle
with them because they could stay in the body longer than expected.
Although the list was very short, lo and behold, something I take that
few other people in the US take was on the list!
So I cut out the milk thistle.
The list is short and interactions are rare, but it's not impossible to
find yourself in that group.
