Had an inmate who went out for a biopsy this morning.  Dept. of
Corrections has used this facility forever and ever and they've done
tons of biopsies there, but their "new procedure" was to want to put
the inmate to sleep and make an incision!  They said it would "only be
maybe an inch long" but she refused, and rightfully so (I think).  Has
anyone ever heard of such a thing?  I've had 4 biopsies, none like
that, and I thought the trend was toward less invasive procedures.  Am
I living under a rock?

This same inmate found out Medical is giving the women with HCV
multivitamins with iron.  When she asked, they said they "want to see
how it affects the biopsies."  She filed a grievance and they quit
doing it.  Duh.

That's how I had it done. Two incisions: one for the doc and one for the
assistant to insert the camera (I think). 10 minutes.

Hey, Thip! Hope you're feeling as well as you can these days!

Nothing I read here surprises me any longer - there's always one more nitwit
medical practitioner out there than you counted on.

I really don't understand why they'd put anyone totally out for a
transcutaneous liver biopsy - there's probably more risk from the anesthesia
than the biopsy itself (although, considering everything else you've related
here over the years, that might not be a valid assumption on my part!)

My unguided, tc punch biopsy was preceded by a very small incision (which I
felt *all* of - damned doc only gave the local/numbing agent a scant minute to
take any effect).

Then he hit me with the punch - which knocked my wind out (doc sez "breath!
breath!" - yeah, sure - just as soon as I come back to my senses, you
knucklehead!)

Three hours of trying to be a good patient later they turned me loose...

Cheers

My sentiments exactly, Grey.  I've had either 3 or 4 of those things, and
they punched me every time after giving me a local.  No biggie, little pain.
I was flabbergasted when she told me what had happened to her, especially
since I know other inmates had theirs done the same way I did.  All I can
figure is that this medical facility has thought of a new way to charge the
State more money.

Lots of folks don't think of inmates as human beings, and I'm sure some of
the readers here wonder why I'm upset about it.  When I walked through the
gates for the first time 8 years ago, my biggest and greatest lesson was
that prisons are full of people.

And I'm maintaining.  Thanks for asking.  Been offered another job and I
keep wavering back and forth, but I have a few months to make up my mind
(not that I have much of a mind left; it's pretty well overrun by little
virii).

Thip, my third biopsy was done laproscopically (sp). They did it so they
could use a camera and take pictures while in there. This is the only
time they have ever opened me up for a biopsy. Unless they are looking
for some specific section of the liver that has cirrhosis rather than a
random section, I would see no use in doing an invasive biopsy. That
would make the patient more susceptible to infection, without any real
benefit to be gained. That's my 2cents worth. BTW, just went to see my
bcld and was told my labs still look good and holding steady. No hurry
to retreat. yahoo for now.
