Well I went in for my ecogram and this time an MD did it. Last time it
was a nurse. The machine seemed to be a modern upgrade from what was
used last time. And, the doc spoke English! He did a very thorough scan
and told me that my liver isn't inflamed at all and the only treatment I
will probably have to go through is to continue not drinking.

Right. Then the only question is who is going to be the one to let you know an
ultrasound cannot determine the actual condition of your liver, and that a
biopsy really is in your own best interest...

I have yet to do the blood tests again and then I see the liver doc. She
decides if I get a biopsy or not. The fact that it isn't inflamed means
nothing?

In my case, it meant nothing, as did my "within normal range" LFTs. My liver
didn't become inflamed until I got gall stones, and without that little
pleasure, I'd probably still not be diagnosed with hep C. So, when I finally
*was* diagnosed (I think it was year 2000?), my doc assured me that liver
damage would be minimal, because of the normal LFTs and prior, clean
ultrasounds. You can imagine my surprise when the biopsy showed bridging
fibrosis-cirrhosis.

Get the biopsy.

Unfortunately, it isn't up to me but the doc. I wonder how much it would
cost if I have to pay for it.

Right on, Sister!  Cody,  It won't hurt.  You will get past it.

After the rhoids operation, I am now confident that it will be a piece
of cake in comparison.

I'm 99% certain one cannot determine the presence or degree of inflammation
from an ultrasound. I'll leave that scant 1% just in case *anyone* can prove
me wrong - but (s)he better be really well armed with citations.

fwiw/fyi:

My ultrasound was "perfect".

My biopsy was Stage 2 going on 3 (scale: 0 to 4) with inflammation Grade 3
(scale: 0 to 5).

And....there were other things going on that were related to my chronically
pissed-off immune system besides frank liver damage. None of these things
would be detected by ultrasound...

Cheers
