Husband was supposed to start treatment today, hepatitis c, 1a. The
nurse, while looking over all tests....saw something that made her
believe that he may have this "autoimmunne thing." Said that usually
this happens in women. Doc is on vacation so she couldn't ask him about
this. Husband couldn't start treatment because this type of hepatitis
uses different drugs. I have never seen anything posted about this.
Could anyone enlighten me on this? This is the 3rd time he has "tried"
to start tx. First time was a trial study and drug co backed out. Second
time, another trial study, his sugar level was to high so they wouldn't
take him. And now this....he is very disappointed & depressed. And so
am I. Thanks for listening and any help on this matter. Deb

Well if there are warning signs that auto-immune hepatitis may occur,
it is better to hold off treatment until things can get clarified. The
tx drugs can amplify such problems and, in extreme cases, may even
cause death.
Did the nurse go into details about why auto-immune hep is suspected?

Here is a link for the Autoimmunne Hepatitis.

There is a lot of information here, I hope it helps.

I hope the OP follows up on this thread. It would be interesting to know what
test result the nurse was keying on.
There's little to distinguish between HCV and AH in the *typical* set of blood
tests & biopsies run on *typical* heppers, but if the doc requested tests for
autoantibodies that could explain what the nurse spotted. If that's the case
- and assuming the patient actually *is* infected with Hep C - I'll be
wondering why the doc requested an autoantibody test in the first place...
Cheers

Hi Grey,
Maybe it's because CAH occurs in females eight times as frequently as
in males, most often in the childbearing years.
My first doctor ordered the tests below before I even saw him the
first time after I filled out a pre-visit questionaire.
One test initially ordered is the Antinuclear antibody (ANA) test, a
marker of the autoimmune process that is positive with a variety of
autoimmune diseases. Anti-Ribonucleic Protein (anti-RNP). Tests
associated with arthritis and inflammation, such as an rheumatoid
factor (RF), an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), a C-Reactive
Protein (CRP), and/or complement levels (C3, C4), CAH is often
accompanied by another autoimmune disease.
Maybe his doctor orders it on all patients or because he had other
symptoms such as arthritis.

I think we both were so surprised to hear about this from the nurse that
we were just numb. I do believe she said something about his liver
biopsy. We made another appointment to see the doc next week. Thank
you for the support & information. Deb

Hi Deb. Best not to get too worked up about autoimmune hepatitis
unless that is confirmed. Then the doctor would have to assess that.
Maybe things will work out yet and this will be just a delay. Good
luck.

[Utility of a little phlebotomy intermittently just before
intravenous
injection of glycyrrhizin for patients with chronic hepatitis C]
[Article in Japanese]
Sumida Y, Kanemasa K, Fukumoto K, Yoshida N, Sakai K.
Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nara City Hospital.
We performed a small phlebotomy (50 ml) intermittently just before
intravenous injection of glycyrrhizin (GL) in eight patients with
chronic hepatitis C and continued this therapy until their serum
ferritin levels dropped below 20 ng/ml without any changes of GL
dosage. No patients had complications but one patient holded
treatment
according to their wishing. In seven patients who completed this
therapy, the average amount of phlebotomized blood was 1221 +/- 1055
ml, their serum ferritin value significantly fell from 253 +/- 233
ng/
ml to 18+/-5 ng/ml (p=0.038). Serum ALT levels also significantly
decreased from 74 +/- 22 IU/L to 41 +/- 12 IU/L (p=0.001). Small
intermittent phlebotomies before GL injection may be a effective
treatment for hepatitis C.

Yes it is.
The nurse I had was on the ball. The doctors (with one notable
exception) didn't seem to know their arses from their elbows.
